Rashard Mendenhall and Reggie Bush found homes in free agency on Wednesday. Steven Jackson doesn't want to get left out in the cold when the game of musical chairs at running back stops spinning.

Rob Demovsky of the Green Bay Press Gazette reports that the Packers and running back Steven Jackson have been talking about a three-year contract. Demovsky cautions that doesn't mean a deal is done or a deal will get done, but clearly there is strong mutual interest.
Jackson makes a lot of sense for the Packers because he would bring professionalism and durability to a shaky position for the Packers. He can play all three downs and take advantage of the beneficial looks that an Aaron Rodgers-led offense gives a running back. I don't think, however, he will have to carry the ball 250 times on the Packers. DuJuan Harris looked great last year, and the Packers like to spread the ball around.
The Atlanta Falcons were tied to Jackson in speculation last month, but they have been focused on re-signing their own players. Green Bay looks like Jackson's best option, even if he's taking a big pay cut from last season.

SJax is going to be a real problem in that O. He'll be able to limit his carries, and still have a ton of yards since everyone will have to worry about the pass first.

merged.
Historia, if it is not about the Bears, please post in the proper forum. Makes our lives easier! :D

Don't get me wrong, SJ is a helluva back and he has given us problems in the past, but he's going to be 30 years old in July and that body has a lot of abuse on it. I hope they take him and overpay.

I'm not worried about him too much..GB won't be running much when they're down by 21 points...BAM!!!

Arsecicle
I'm not sweating that. The Pack have other issues with their own key players leaving (Driver, Jennings, Finley, Woodson). Jackson is exceptional, but I also think his mileage will soon catch up to him. My hunch is, GB may be a better running team, but their holes will neutralize things.
BUT, do I still believe they will take the North? Yep. But it doesn't mean the Bears can't go to the playoffs and even compete with them if/when they would meet, either.

Atlanta Falcons, Steven Jackson agree on deal - NFL News | FOX Sports on MSN
An already potent Atlanta Falcons offense just got even stouter.
FREE FOR ALL
Now that NFL free agency is open, who is signing where? Find out in our updating blog.
The Falcons have agreed to a free-agent contract with former St. Louis Rams running back Steven Jackson.
The Falcons have made re-signing their own players the main focus of offseason personnel moves the past few years, but the team was in need of a starting running back after releasing Michael Turner. One of the NFL’s most physical rushers, the Falcons are counting on the 6-foot-2, 250-pound Jackson providing the same hard-charging style that Turner did the previous five seasons in Atlanta.
Jackson, 29, has rushed for at least 1,000 yards the past eight seasons for St. Louis. Jackson, a 2004 first-round draft pick, opted out of the final year of his Rams contract to test the free-agent market.
The Green Bay Packers also had expressed interest in Jackson.
Jackson now joins a standout offensive cast that includes quarterback Matt Ryan, tight end Tony Gonzalez, and wide receivers Roddy White and Julio Jones.
The Rams selected two running backs (Daryl Richardson and Isaiah Pead) in last year’s draft who are expected to compete for the starting spot during training camp.
ESPN first reported the news of Jackson’s signing. Financial terms weren’t immediately available

Steven Jackson, Atlanta Falcons agree to contract
Steven Jackson has found a new home.
NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reported the veteran running back agreed to terms on a contract Thursday with the Atlanta Falcons, according to a team source. ESPN's Adam Schefter had the first report, and the Falcons later announced that Jackson has agreed to a three-year contract. Jackson, 29, spent the first nine seasons of his career with the St. Louis Rams, racking up 10,135 yards and 56 rushing touchdowns as one of the NFL's premier rushers. Jackson asked for and was given the ability to void his contract with the Rams with the goal of catching on with a contender in a featured role. This makes him a potentially ideal fit with the Falcons, who recently cut ties with Michael Turner. Jackson should see plenty of work, though expect Jacquizz Rodgers to get his touches as a change-of-pace option. Jackson consistently was linked to the Green Bay Packers this week, but the Packers suspected all along that Jackson's reps only were using Green Bay to drive up his price with the Falcons. Now, Jackson joins a veritable All-Star team in Atlanta. The Falcons' offense was dangerous last season with quarterback Matt Ryan, wide receivers Julio Jones and Roddy White and tight end Tony Gonzalez. If Jackson plays to his reputation, there is no ceiling.
