So who is this kid that we drafted? How good is he, and what did it cost us to move up?

    Richards
The Chicago Blackhawks announced today that they have agreed to terms with forward Brad Richards on a one-year contract.

Richards posted 51 points (20g, 31a) last season while appearing in all 82 regular-season games and serving as an alternate captain for the New York Rangers. Last season marked the seventh time in his 13 NHL seasons that he has appeared in each of his team’s regular-season games. He ranked second on the team in goals, third in points and shared fourth in power-play goals (five), while leading Rangers forwards with 18:41 of ice time per game. Richards also added 12 points (5g, 7a) in 25 Stanley Cup Playoff games, while helping the Rangers to their first Stanley Cup Final appearance since 1994.
The Murray Harbour, Prince Edward Island, native has recorded 867 points (276g, 591a) in 982 career NHL regular-season games with Tampa Bay, Dallas and the New York Rangers. He ranks ninth among active NHL players in career assists and is 12th in career points. Richards has posted a career-high 91 points twice (2005-06 with Tampa Bay and 2009-10 with Dallas) and scored a career-best 28 goals with Dallas in 2010-11. He has scored at least 20 goals in 10 of his 13 NHL seasons.
The 34-year-old has registered 90 points (33g, 57a) in 118 career Stanley Cup Playoff games with Tampa Bay, Dallas and New York, and helped lead the Lightning to the 2004 Stanley Cup championship. He earned an NHL-high 26 points (12g, 14a) during the 2004 championship run and was named the winner of the Conn Smythe Trophy as the NHL’s Most Valuable Player during the playoffs.
Richards was honored as the winner of the NHL’s Lady Byng Memorial Trophy, given annually to the player adjudged to have exhibited the best type of sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct combined with a high standard of playing ability, following the 2003-04 season and was named to the NHL’s All-Rookie Team following the 2000-01 campaign after leading all first-year players with 62 points (21g, 41a) that season. He was named to the NHL All-Star Team during the 2010-11 season and participated in the NHL YoungStars Game during the 2001-02 campaign.
He has represented Canada in international competition four times, winning a gold medal in the World Cup (2004) and a bronze medal in the World Junior Championships (2000). Richards also participated for the Canadian team in the 2006 Winter Olympics and 2001 World Championships.
Prior to his professional career, Richards recorded 432 points (143g, 289a) in 190 career games with Rimouski of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League from 1997 to 2000. During the 1999-2000 season, he led the QMJHL in points (186), goals (71) and assists (115) and earned league MVP honors while leading the Oceanic to QMJHL and Memorial Cup titles. That season he was also named the Canadian Hockey League Player of the Year, Memorial Cup MVP, QMJHL Offensive Player of Year and QMJHL Playoff MVP, while being named to the CHL First All-Star Team, Memorial Cup All-Star Team and QMJHL First All-Star Team.
Richards was originally selected by Tampa Bay in the third round, 64th overall, of the 1998 NHL Entry Draft.

He could probably be a number one center on some teams, despite his age. On the Hawks, he is their number 2. This was a great signing!

I'll bet kaner is happy! Finally a decent center who should be able to keep up with him instead of slowing him down.

8 years . Yes . This is two potential HOF'ers to keep the team built around . If they contribute to 2 ( or 3 ) more Cups then it'll be a great era for the Hawks . Actually their Golden Era ( which it already probably is ) .

Blackhawks add Kevin Dineen to staff

The Chicago Blackhawks hired Kevin Dineen as an assistant coach on Monday.

Dineen, 50, most recently coached the Canadian women's national team to a gold medal in the 2014 Olympic Winter Games. In addition to winning gold in Sochi, he led Canada's under-18 men's team to a bronze medal at the world championship in Finland in April.
He previously was the head coach of the Florida Panthers from 2011 to 2013. He also was the head coach of the AHL's Portland Pirates from 2005 to 2011.
Dineen was a teammate of Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville on the Hartford Whalers from 1984 to 1990.
"Kevin brings proven leadership qualities, having served as an alternate captain and captain for several of his teams during his 19-year NHL career," Blackhawks general manager Stan Bowman said in a statement. "He will bring another well-respected voice to our coaching staff and we look forward to his contributions to our team."
Dineen replaces Jamie Kompon, who was named last week the head coach and general manager of the Portland Winterhawks of the Western Hockey League. Kompon spent two seasons with the Blackhawks.
"I am thrilled to join Joel Quenneville, a future Hall of Fame coach, and Mike Kitchen, as we strive to reach the ultimate goal in professional hockey," Dineen said in a statement.

This is a great move. Dineen was a great player and has developed into an excellent coach. Our PP has hope for next year. I just hope we can keep him a few years before he gets a head coach gig.

IMO, had we swapped Kompon for Dineen last year, we would have the Cup now.

Hawks still need to get under salary cap

CHICAGO -- Someone who was a Chicago Blackhawk on Friday won’t be when the NHL season begins.

That’s the reality of the Blackhawks' salary-cap situation. The Blackhawks are around $1.3 million above the $69 million cap for next season and must get under it before they set their roster. To do so, they will have to trade at least one player.

Blackhawks players acknowledged the team’s salary-cap issue prior to their fan convention on Friday.

"Yeah, I know," Blackhawks winger Bryan Bickell said about someone having to go before the season. "I haven't really looked too much into it. There's a couple adjustments that need to take part to get through this cap thing, but I’m not hearing anything, which is good. It's going to work out the way it is, and, hopefully, it will work for the best."

A number of Blackhawks have been associated with trade rumors throughout the offseason. Defenseman Johnny Oduya has been one of those players. Oduya said Friday he expected to return for another season, but he also has been around long enough to realize anything can happen. He has one season remaining on his contract and has a cap hit of $3.375 million for next season.

"I wouldn’t say nervous, but you know the reality of the business," Oduya said. "And I’ve been around it for a couple of these situations where you might be a little bit over. Or, on the other hand, you’re the cheaper player and you can fit in in a different way. It’s not really much you can do but realize the situation and you prepare for the season the same way.

"I think they’re happy with my play from last year. Like I said, it’s a new situation for next year. We’ll see what happens. I’m very, very happy to be here. This is the place where I really enjoy playing hockey, and I’ve loved it here so far. And I think I’ll like it in the future, too. If that’s not the case, I'll go somewhere else."

Forward Patrick Sharp also was rumored to be on the trading block this summer. His agent, Rick Curran, said recently the Blackhawks would not be trading Sharp.

Sharp addressed those rumors himself on Friday.

"There’s going to be talk, discussion, rumors," Sharp said. "It’s part of the business. But I think what my agent said was pretty self-explanatory. I’ve been able to get away from hockey and kind of relax a little bit. Just got back from Connecticut with my family yesterday. Looking forward to training and playing a great next year."

So, who’s going to be traded?

Blackhawks general manager Stan Bowman wouldn’t reveal that, but he said he wasn’t concerned about it.

"We certainly have to be ready to go by October," Bowman said. "That’s the goal. A lot of things change between now and then. You have to display some patience.

"Like I said all along, we have some ideas of what we’re going to do. A lot of things happen once camps open both for us and for other teams, in terms of players maybe you expect to meet expectations don’t quite do it and certain teams are looking around trying to find players. I always think you're always in a good position when you have a lot of established players. I think that’s better than the other way around."
