With all the 3-4 coaches coming on board I did a mock at draftek changing team needs and all to match many of the so called experts mock draft picks and or teaam needs that I could find. Additionally I tallied the salary cap and added Free agents and cut some players. ( YEP, I played GM for the day). On the mock I can not change the player rankings so I additionally used player rankings from draftcountdown and paired the picks by position. Draftcountdown does not brake 34 defense players from 4-3 defense so I used the weight of DT' to add them to a 3-4. Did similar on OLB34 with DEs, but more on speed so gives a comparison of picks. I deliberately loaded the Bears with D- line help and targeted F/A for CB and safety. Anyway here it is.

Cuts: Julius Peppers, Michael Bush, Adam Podlesh, Earl Bennett
    Cap savings of $26,308, 333 - Dead money (1/2 Peppers only) $7,208,334 or a net of $19,100,00

STILL UNDER THE CAP HAVE 50 GUYS ON THE TEAM AND ABOUT $1mm LEFT. May need to free up a few dollars but relatively close

COULD EASILY MOVE HAGEMANN TO DT AND AND LET STINSON OR BASS PLAY DE FOR A 4-3 LOOK
GOT ENGOUGH LINEBACKERS, AND CB'S FOR A HYBRID TYPE DEFENSE.

No way the Bears take the entire draft with only D players, I hope they don't bring back Wright and Scott, I'd rather they find another S and bring back Britton.

That being said it's a good take on what could happen if they feel the need to switch to a 3-4. I still think it's going to be a 4-3 base, but if you have a guy like Hagemen you can do both, and that's the important part b/c I do believe Trestman/Tucker/Emery want a "versatile" Def.

Thanks for all obvious work, I hate the idea of playing w/actual FA #'s, I'm going to have to look at draftek, never used it but it sounds interesting.

I didnt like all defense either and really wanted a TE and OC. Looking at players avail between picks just never had a good option to do better. By projection a big run on DT's at beginning of second so I modified my critieria to get a DT before they were gone. Originally had ILB and Skov. Managed Borland in the 4th. Here is a breakdown by round and position. Another interesting note is CB is taken early and often

Ya CB seems to be a deep position this year where S is considered thin.

You put a lot of work into that, so kudos on the effort. However, Ric is right...no way we go all Defense in the draft. Plus, i do not think they are going to rely on 5 starting rookies on defense, that would be insane, especially 2 out of 3 on the DL.

ya he put a lot more work into that then I normally do, I like a lot of it; don't be too surprised if we have 3-4 rookies starting though, 1-2 dl, 1-2 db's and maybe 1 lb,

Great work! I don't think we go all d either, but whatever. I'd switch Briggs and Williams in the line up. I like the signings of ward and vernner. I also wouldn't be terribly concerned with rookies starting on defense...especially on the line.

I agree not all picks will be Defense, just an example of going 3-4 and prioritizing dline. Signing Ratliff or somebody similar to a contract and adding some experience on DLine with Wooton is probably a good idea. I like the flexibility with Hageman being able to go 34DE or 43DT. Tried to estimate some salaries to see what was possible. Just an option. Could go after FS and or CB in rd 1 and find FA DE. I just took the approach that I want my last line of defense, CB and S to come with experience.

If Emery could somehow land 2 high quality defenders in FA (Ward and Verner in your example) that would be a great start to the offseason and make the draft much more flexible. As you illustrated the cap space availability is there with likely cuts and +/- the "conversion options" built into recently signed contracts (Cut's especially) that we have discussed. It depends on who ultimately hits FA and how much they can be signed for.

MAJOR WRIGHT is listed as the 5th best free agent safety. Chris Clemmons is the 4th and made $2.8MM last yr. So that was my logic, What would you suggest considering the salary cap and all??

I would suggest anyone that thinks Wright is the 5th best FA safety has not watched many Bears games the past 2 years; or is high on opium. I would take just about ANY S that under 30 before him.

Sorry S is a personal issue of mine, I wanted both Conte and Wright gone last year; they are ONLY good when there is a substantial pass rush, if it's only average they are awful, and when the rush is bad, they are not capable of even backup level play.

I was going to bring this up. I'm not advocated for either Conte OR Wright, but I really think we ignore the problem when we place the blame on these guys with a front 7 that was a sieve. Man, we could have two all-pro's playing Safety, but with our front 7 as bad as they were, it's not gonna look good...it just isn't. Like I say, I'm not an advocate for either guy, but I AM an advocate for spending the bulk of our money on the front end of our D as opposed to the back end. I would rather keep Conte and Wright BOTH, if the savings could yield a stud front 7 as opposed to trying to go cheap up front and paying too much for a couple of new Safetys.

I do use them, but I don't go strictly off them; if they have a gross error in judgment I disregard what they think. Like right now they have the Bears grabbing a RB in the 3rd round, and just no way that happens.

4dabears, that might be true, but these two NEED all pro front 7 to look average; when the front seven went down, these two showed their true colors and were just brutally bad, it was embaressing.

Wright sucks and shouldn't get a new contract. Not thinking twice about that.
