I agree with Soul. The idea being touted that the Allen-signing somehow means 3-tech is now all set is incorrect IMO.

    Our current DTs are
Paea: hurt last season off and on, will be a FA after this season
Ratliff: nearing the end of his career, depth player only at this point
Collins: coming off ACL tear 6 mos ago, needs to prove himself, probably not ready to play in September

Sorry, I don't see any of these 1st round Safeties being Eric Berry 2.0 or the new Jairus Byrd.
If the overall player quality is similar, you take the pass rusher over the safety. Every time.
Adding Donald to this DL roster makes it a beastly unit.
Buchanon or Ward in the 2nd/3rdis your safety for the future.

I did an until BearStuff posted I though that $4mil had been added too. Now I'm not certain but it'll be confirmed on way or another in a few days.

OK, I trust you. Do they still have enough to sign me as a Long-Snapper just in case Mannelly decides to retire. I'm whole lot better at throwing a football backwards between my legs than I am throwing it forward. :5v[1]:

FWIW this comes from Brad Biggs who, along with David Haugh, is probably as close as any Trib reporter gets to being an insider. The trib has always been a huge supporter of the Bears all the way back to the day of Halas and the Monsters of the Midway. I just listened to his discussion with Dan Wiederer about the Allen signing and this is the gist of it.

Allen will be named the starting RDE and play a majority of the snaps there. Houston will be named the starter at LDE and Willie Young will be the swing man relieving both in the rotation to keep the pass rush fresh. This fits with the reason why Allen chose the Bears over Seattle where he would have been seen as mainly a 3rd down player. It also fits with Houston's stated preference of staying at DE as his primary position. He intends to lose about 15-20lbs and play around 283-285lbs to become faster off the edge. As for Izzy I can only assume that Emery believed him to be either an upgrade or strong competition for Lane and Scott at DE and with his versatility he probably has an inside track to become a utility lineman at DE and DT.

Based on these comments from Biggs I'd say the Bears are still very much in the market of a 3 tech DT so I'd put Donald, Jernigan, and Quarles at or near the top of their draft board and in that order. That's not to say that Gilbert, Dix, Pryor, Hagemen, and possibly Dennard aren't there but they'd be intertwined with the DTs. So I think we're still back to DT and FS as being the positions of highest need and the Allen signing hasn't changed anything.

One other reason I'm very pleased with this deal is because it allows them to play Houston at LDE where I believe he'll be most effective. The majority of NFL teams are "right handed" and will run to the defensive left. McClellin needs a player like Houston in front of him so that he can penetrate and rush and we also need a strong run player next to the 3 tech DT when playing that side of the formation. You let the DT loose and allow him to make an attempt to make a stop or disrupt the play in the backfield and behind him is a DE and an LB who can clean up if the DT fails to make the stop. This is a perfect set up for guys like McClellin and/or Donald on that left side.

not necessarily true, Houston well could be a or THE DT for this team w/Allen and Young at DE, all 3 are being paid like starters w/multi year deals.

Read the above post about the insights of Haugh and Biggs.

Houston is not the team's "new 3-tech". He is the primary LDE who can flex inside here and there situationally. Still need a Melton replacement.

im sure we have just bout enough cap space for that, but unlike Manelly u wont qualify for vet min, u will be an UDFA, and that is the ONLY problem I see with u signing

I'll take a rookie's pay. I'm worth more but willing to sacrifice for the good of team. :bah:

    according to sportstrac:

Year Base S. Bonus Misc. Cap Hit Dead
    2014 3,000,000 - - 3,000,000 15,500,000
    2015 1,000,000 - 11,500,000 12,500,000 12,500,000
    2016 8,500,000 - - 8,500,000 -
    2017 8,000,000 - - 8,000,000

That is a hell of a deal, no dead money after the 2nd year.
