Bears' Marc Trestman honored by Montreal Alouettes

After just one season at the helm, it's far from determined what Marc Trestman's legacy will be with the Bears. But Trestman did so well at his old place of employment, he was honored a year after departing.
The Montreal Alouettes honored Trestman, who coached the Canadian Football League team for five seasons, at halftime of their game on Friday, saluting his success that saw three appearances in the Grey Cup (the CFL's championship game) and two title-game wins.

“He meant a great deal to us,” Alouettes offensive tackle Josh Bourke told Herb Zurowsky of the Montreal Gazette. “I learned how to be a much better professional under Marc — the attention to detail, he held people accountable. The discipline. He taught us a lot ... how to be a better man and be accountable with everything in your life.”

Trestman posted a 59-31 record in those five seasons in Montreal, winning a division title in all but one of them. He went just 8-8 in his first season with the Bears and missed the playoffs, something he never did with the Alouettes. All in all, his championship-winning tenure in Canada warranted some halftime festivities on Friday.

And as is apparent from the words of his former players, the impact he left was about more than just winning football games.

“He had a tremendous impact,” Alouettes slotback S.J. Green said. “He was a leader, a great leader, a guy that we followed, that led this team to success. He left with that same respect.

“He’s a guy who helped me become who I am as a professional, and he taught me a lot about life, growing as a man and as a person. He really cared for individuals and had that genuine care for people.”
Bears fans can only hope Trestman earns the same adulation and success in his time in Chicago.

I think this is just one more example of the kind of guy we have in charge of our football team. Everything the Bears have done in the past few years speaks to their desire to become one of the NFL's best and a first class operation that players are proud to play for and a team that fans can respect for their efforts and support.

Trestman's previous NFL career was a classic case of judging a book by its cover as no one wanted a nerdy wonk for a HC -- until the Alouettes decided to open the cover of the book and found out what it contained.
