This is a short article, but it makes a couple of good points. This was interesting: "The thing to remember about the free agency periods is that they are not about finding superstars. Signing players is about depth, getting talent to fill roster spots at a reasonable price. It will be the draft where Emery makes his money finding the stars. "

LOL, and Angelo & Lovie were not really let go. We just "retooled" them.

The bills are expected to let Alex Carrington walk...I wouldn't mind seeing him in a bears uni. He can play end or tackle....very versatile.

Earl Mitchell is another young guy who could play d tackle for us and could come cheaply on the free agent market.

Well, this is good news. Back in 2010 I actually wanted the Bears to draft that kid. Great size, strong and very versatile.

And, going to disagree again. Its not a rebuild, we still have an intact core of vets (especially offense). How many rebuild teams have a Pro-bowl capable QB, WR duo AND RB?

We are definitely shifting to a younger team, but its not the dreaded R word.

we aren't rebuilding the entire team, just the D. And yes when you have 6 guys left on 1 side of the ball...it's a rebuild.

unfortunately it definitely looks like a defensive rebuild. Offense looks fine, only minor tweaks but D.... gah!

With so many contracts expiring and Cutler's bloated figure, I hope Emery has his wheeler-dealer hat on, he's going to be very busy!

I am as well, to give him a leg up on FA, which is opening in just a couple of weeks. I believe since he is vested, he can sign at any point after he is released. The only option at this point is a total overhaul of the D, as youth is what we really need right now. The two players left that I really want re-signed is Wootton and Bowman. Ratliff would be good as well, but his age is a concern.

Cutlers number is not bloated...it's only bloated if they don't take advantage of the clause that allows them to turn it into bonus money.

I agree, but if we CAN absorb the cap hit without having to prorate the bonus over future years, it will allow the team to be in healthier cap-shape in future years. I'm not advocating we do this (pull the trigger on the bonus thing) or don't do it, but I actually like how the Bears set this up with Cutler. It seems like a win/win thing. Now that obviously depends upon whether or not we agree on Cutler's worth, and on how well he performs moving forward with the Bears.

Yes, and they also did it with Jennings and Slausens deals as well...so if we don't want to touch Cutlers money this year we don't have too...all depends on who we're targeting and whats needed. It was an unbelievably smart way to go about the signings.

Cutting him before June 1 means that we can't spread his cap hit over two years. That is a much needed $4+M.

I'm a wait to see it to believe it on this. IF it was that easy then why not just structure it that way from the get go? IF it used that way, I'll be more happy w/it, but I don't see it happening.

I don't understand the cap nuances at all. But in my own pea brain, I have it figured that teams do have some ability to count contract money in different ways against the cap, and the Cutler contract is just one of ours that will allow Emery to adjust the cap hit to best fit our situation moving forward. We can take a greater hit early-on in the contract, and lesson the size of the hit in future seasons, or we can lessen the front size of the hit, but then have a greater cap hit in future seasons. If this is true then I'd rather we take our lumps this season and have greater cap space later. And with Peppers, I'd just cut the guy and pay the cap penalty now. Yes it hurts now, but why mortgage our future? I do understand that Cutler and Pep are two completely different cap situations. Now you guys who understand this better than I do, may have to enlighten me here .....I've never really understood the voodoo of the cap.

You can cut him before then and designate him a june 1st cut I believe and it will have the same effect.

Bearstuff and Butkus I think are both right. The whole June 1st designation allows the Bears to spread the dead money over two seasons and not just this one. However, I think Butkus is right in that teams can cut players earlier and designate them June 1st cuts (for the benefit of the player), but I THINK this is limited to just two players a team (I could be off on the limit number), which really doesn't effect us, but it IS allowed (early June 1 cuts). With that said, perhaps there is a caveat in the rule that states that you still have to at least wait until FA starts (the new league year), which would make sense.
