I'll take a good FA safety that plays with a crappy DL than one that plays with one that has a great DL. How many times do we see guys that come in with a sub-standard line and get exposed? Unless there's a Mike Brown 2.0 out there I say lean toward the DL.

I am not exaggerating here. I'm dead serious. If those two safeties look like starter quality to you, then I hope you're right. I don't see it. They look pathetic to me. Period.

I think it's a "Chicago thing" where we make excuses for poor players. Most recently we did it with J'Marcus Webb (the eternal hope that he wasn't as bad as it seemed), and guys like Chris Williams, Shea McClellen, and a number of others over recent years. But at some point we need to get real here. Rotten players are rotten players. All of our excuses are not going to make them magically become good players.

Yes, the DL play is even worse than the safety play. That doesn't mean the safeties are decent. It just means that we have pure really bad players at BOTH positions.

Our safeties are pathetic. And that is NO exaggeration. They stink.

Maybe they found an upgrade available in free agency.

JABF I agree 99%, i would just give another chance to Conte (he was ok 2 y ago) and Shea, for another year, lets see what he can do as LB.

Certainly I agree about Shea. Give him a shot at LB, and I hope he does well there. Regarding Conte, I don't know. Maybe as a backup he'd be adequate. And if Conte can turn it around, I'll be happy about that too. My only point is that we have issues that go beyond the DL alone. Sure, make the DL priority #1, but we have other serious issues too. In a sense, it is like the offense was a few years ago when we needed a QB, but also WR's and an offensive line. We got Cutler and that was a move up. But upgrading 1 position didn't solve all of our problems. Once we upgraded the OL, TE, and WR's, then we had a solid offense. It's kind of the same thing on defense now. Upgrading the DL will help us, but our woes go beyond the one unit. Conte and Wright are really really really bad. Both of them.

I don't know. I'm not as down on Conte as everyone else. He had a down year last year, but the year before he was looking up. This year will tell a lot. Wright never could stay healthy and then was terrible this year so he's done.

I don't want to sound all doom and gloom here. I'm hoping for the best with Conte too. Maybe with better players around him he'll bounce back. I hope so.
