    Vikings-Bears: 5 Storylines To Watch

This week the Vikings hit the road for the second consecutive time to face a division opponent, with this week’s challenge being to face the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field. The Vikings come off a 34-24 loss at Detroit while the Bears are feeling the momentum of a season-opening win over the Cincinnati Bengals.

Last season these two teams split their pair of matchups, with both teams holding serve on their home field. The Vikings get the first opportunity to break serve this year, and if they do it’ll mark their first win in the Windy City since 2007.

Let’s take a look ahead at five things to watch this week as the Vikings prepare to face the Bears in Week 2...

    1. Pressure on Ponder to improve
Quarterbacks shoulder more blame than they should when the going gets tough and receive more credit than they should when the going is smooth. That’s the nature of the beast in the NFL. The Vikings offense struggled to maintain possession last week in Detroit, turning the ball over four times and failing to put together a drive of longer than four plays until deep in the 3rd quarter. As the triggerman, quarterback Christian Ponder[IMG] has taken plenty of criticism for his and his offense’s performance in the season opener. So now he and the rest of his offensive teammates must move on to the next game and figure out how to improve, and they’ll have to figure out how to do that while going against a stingy Chicago Bears defense on their home turf – Soldier Field. Coincidentally, the next biggest moment in Ponder’s career will take place on the very field in which he made his first NFL appearance back in 2011 as a replacement for Donovan McNabb. Ponder’s performance in that game was sufficient enough to lead the Vikings to use him for the rest of the season, and now it’s time for Ponder to put together the kind of performance that will get the offense back on track for the rest of the 2013 season.

    2. Urlacher and Winfield are gone, but these defenses can still make playsA couple of stalwarts from the Bears and Vikings defenses are gone, with both linebacker Brian Urlacher and cornerback Antoine Winfield now retired. Those two players were vital components to their respective defenses for many seasons and were constant standouts in this Vikings-Bears rivalry. But even without those two stars, these two defenses can still play. Last week against the Cincinnati Bengals, Chicago forced three turnovers (two interceptions, one fumble) and they yielded just 3.0 yards per carry. On surface level, the Vikings defensive effort doesn’t look impressive because they allowed 469 net yards of offense, 34 points and 28 first downs. But when you consider the Vikings defense was on the field for nearly 70% of the 1st half and still had allowed just six points 28 minutes into the game, or that Detroit started drives inside Vikings territory five times and came away with just 10 points in those drives, you can see how the effort was impressive to some extent. The Vikings defense came into the season wanting to create more turnovers, and they forced two against the Detroit and forced another two fumbles that were recovered by the Lions. With the talent level on both of these defenses and with how each group played last week, perhaps we’re in for an old fashioned Black and Blue Division defensive struggle.

    3. Keep an eye on the offensive line
In recent seasons a Vikings-Bears matchup meant it was time to keep an eye on the offensive line – of the Bears. The Vikings have had some success in pressuring Bears quarterback Jay Cutler and in general the matchup between the Vikings defensive line and the Bears offensive line has been an advantage for the Purple. But of off last week’s games, it’s the Vikings offensive line that people are talking about. The Bears didn’t give up a sack to a very good Bengals defensive line and the Vikings struggled to run the ball in Detroit and quarterback Christian Ponder was sacked three times.

Bears can target Jeffery against Vikings' Cover-2
Cutler can spread field with receivers to find deep seam to exploit
    Matt BowenScouting the Bears
    8:29 p.m. CDT, September 12, 2013

As the Bears prepare for the Vikings on Sunday at Soldier Field, Jay Cutler and the offense should expect to see plenty of Cover-2 looks from Leslie Frazier's club.

Using the All-22 coaches tape from the Week 1 victory over the Bengals, let's examine how the Bears targeted Alshon Jeffery from an alignment and scheme perspective to beat Cover-2.

The Bears have their Ace personnel (two wide receivers, two tight ends, one running back) on the field in a Unit Slot alignment to create vertical passing lanes against the Bengals base 4-3 personnel in a Cover-2 shell.

This allows Cutler to read the two vertical routes down the field and target the seam versus the free safety in the deep half and the Mike Backer trailing inside.

With Bengals free safety Reggie Nelson increasing his depth to play over the top of both Marshall and Jeffery as a deep half defender, Cutler now has a throwing lane between the numbers and the hash to look up the seam route.

Nelson is going to break downhill on the throw, but with the Mike Backer trailing from an inside leverage position, Cutler can put this ball on the back shoulder of Jeffery to expose the deep hole in the Cover-2 defense for an explosive gain.

On Sunday, the Bears once again can use their pre-snap alignments and personnel to create inside matchups against the Vikings Cover-2. And that leads to opportunities to produce in the middle of the field.

I'm seeing a game of swing passes and screens .. and grunting to get every inch you can get ,.. yes even for AP

Bears O line has improved and remarkably,..they didn't surrender one sac to the Bangles,...where the Queens O line surrendered 3 to the lions pass rush ,..

Ponder is no Manning, Brady, Kaepernik , Dalton,,, Rodgers even AP has coughed it up

Da Bears gave up 63 yards last week rushing , pass D and Pass rush need to improve Yes it's what done on the fly at the pro level and we do have a real HC now

Peps & Melton didn't participate in the pre- season . Their boy Williams isn't going to be all that fresh either

    It's a growing team ... a younger team ,...

Yeah, I know it's "one game at a time", but if the Bears are worth their salt (and I think we all agree), this is a game they SHOULD win. I agree with you that we should be 3-0 after the first 3 games, because we JUST had a game against one of the toughest opponents we'll have this year, and came away with the W. Minnesota is most definitely a step down (it took a 2k season for them to make it to the playoffs last year; no one has ever replicated a 2k season) from that, and Pittsburgh is a step down from the Vikings, talent wise.

I'd say Pitts more injury depleted now,... jus sayin All Though big Ben's still a threat with their starting center going down for the season ,....THEY R IN TROUBLE

All the Bears need to be doing is showing up and giving their all , none of this complacent BS ,..personally IMHO I think Trestman's well prepared in that department as far keeping his players heads in the game

Why do they allow camera guys to be right outside the end zone? It's dangerous and stupid.

Hopefully Cutler learns from that INT the rest of the game, I think he'll be ok.

Nice INT td return by Jennings.

What the heck is wrong with our defense???? We aren't tackling well. Bad Jay is back. At least the O-Line isn't awful.
