Mack is a FA, but he's probably going to resign with the Browns or be a very expensive FA pickup for some team.

Yeah, I don't think we have the ammo to go shopping in FA for big fish on the O side of the ball. We need DB/DL way more.

Mack is not on our menu, that's for sure. Kromer managed to make a UDFA castoff in De La Puenta into a quality starter, so I hope he has the same touch with Boggs.

I just want to reinforce just how unusual it is for a player like Boggs to make it as a center in today's NFL. There were four UDFA starters at center in 2013. Three of them (Cook, Sendlein, and Wendell) were on their perspective teams for at least 4 full seasons or longer before being given a shot at center. The only other one is De LaPuenta, who bounced to like 5 different teams until Kromer found him for New Orleans.

Boggs can bomb, you never know, so it makes sense to hedge the bet with Garza on the roster. I'm optimistic that Boggs makes i just because it's not Tice making the call here but Kromer.

Garza said he wants to play for two more years, so I hope he does some quality mentoring this year like he did last year.

Boggs was around the entire season, that is experience that he could not get being on the PS.
Garza will likely not play much in the preseason, so we should see if he has improved.

I hope he has, and is the center of the future.

Boggs not only was around the entire season, he was a part of the 45 man active roster the entire season. You don't do that unless you see some potential in the kid. Garza is very durable and if an injury occured you could just have slid Slauson over to center and played Britton at guard if they didn't like what they saw in the kid.

I would have liked to see us sign Wendell.

I'm glad we got it done. I thought he played better last year with some better talent surrounding him. As far as Boggs goes, I just think he's too small but if we don't draft a center we need someone on the roster to backup Garza so Boggs would fill that role.

Boggs said in an interview last season that he was 195 in college, and 295 now. He's 6-3. He's big enough, and I thought he showed promise last preseason. If we are hanging on to this kid and he's just a backup center, when we already have a backup center in Slauson, I will be very surprised.

One side comment about Garza. The guy must be in incredible physical condition for his age. At training camp over the years, I've often been within a couple feet of him when he's signed autographs for the kids after a practice, and he's the single most impressive player physically that I've seen there. His body fat must be almost nil for a 310 pound man. I've read that he doesn't have an ACL in his right knee. He tore it in 2003 and didn't know he was playing without it until a physical in 2005 when they discovered he'd been playing without it. He still doesn't have one. I've been frustrated with his play at times, but I've never questioned his heart. The guy gives 100% all the time. He seems like a great guy too.......always a class act with the kids and the fans.

My UDFA list was missing the Packers starting center. It does not change my UDFA statement I made earlier about how rare it is for recent UDFA's to now make it in the NFL. If Boggs succeeds, he would definitely be beating the odds.

    Evan Dietrich-Smith Undrafted in 2009
Debuted in 2009 for the Green Bay Packers

    Kyle Cook Undrafted in 2007
Debuted in 2009 for the Cincinnati Bengals

    Lyle Sendlein Undrafted in 2007
Debuted in 2007 for the Arizona Cardinals

Brian de la Puente Undrafted in 2008
Debuted in 2011 for the New Orleans Saints

    Ryan Wendell Undrafted in 2008
Debuted in 2009 for the New England Patriots

Wendell has been with New England for the past five years. They are always competitive, so if I were him I'd wait forever until the Pats tell me they do not want me back and go another direction.

If only the Bears had a time machine, but then we would not have Jay for when we needed him in 85.

Boggs getting from 195 to 295 is attributed to Garza Super Donuts:
