I should point out that if Pep is cut in either of the next two years that will still be much cheaper than paying him to stay. The question is whether his pay warrants the difference necessary to keep him.

The cap hit would be whatever the remainder of his unamortized signing bonus is. I don't have it to the penny but with this last restructure it would leave about $8.4 mil of dead cap space we'd need to recapture. His salaries wouldn't be a part of it since he's no longer being paid after he's released.

FWIW, if you're keeping track this move will increase his cap cost by $1 mil each of the next two years.

    EDIT: Best estimates for his future cap cost are;

    2014; $18.183 mil Salary portion; $13.9 mil
    2015; $20.683 mil Salary portion: $16.5 mil

Since the majority of his cap cost is in his salary it makes sense that Emery will ask him to reduce that in order to get his cap costs down and if not then at some point he'll probably let him go. We'll know more after this season whether or not somebody is ready to step into his shoes but those are God damn big shoes. He's played well enough to be a HOF candidate.

Wonder what the cap space is w/all the cuts and this restructure and Webb's, plus the trade. I know they've been making room just wondering how much, and what they plan on doing w/it.

Is this a sign of a pick up to come?

We should have over 30 million in salary cap room next year, but we have a ton of key free agents. If we cut Peppers that would free quite a bit more.
    Key Free Agents next year
    Cutler
    Hester
    Garza
    Slauson
    Melton
    Wooten
    Costanzo
    Anderson
    Williams
    Hayden
    Tillman
    Jennings
    Wright
    Gould

Cutler, Tillman, Jennings, Melton are all big money. Wooten, Wright and Gould could all get nice contracts.

If we cut Peppers it would probably be to sign some of these players

The best way to get cap room is to extend one of our high priced veterans and then convert this years salary into a signing bonus.
For example Melton makes 8.45 million this year...if we would have signed him to an extension, say 4 years 36 million. Give him a 10 million SB.
    2013 2.5 SB 1 Base 3.5 Cap hit...saves 4.95 this year
    2014 2.5 SB 6 Base 8.5 Cap hit
    2015 2.5 SB 7.5 Base 10 Cap hit
    2016 2.5 SB 12 Base 14 Cap hit

Basically it is a 3 year deal with a 2.5 million dollar cap hit in 2016. You can't do this with everyone, but I would much rather do something like this than push Peppers cap number up in the following years.

In 2015, we will be required to cut everyone on the team except for Unga. Unga is the only player that will remain on the practice squad, PUP list, inactive ready reserve, or futures contract of his choosing. This will remain until he finally leaves the team, but we bring him back on a one day contract so he can retire as a Bear.

Garza is a key free agent. I love it. Bring back the Immortal Roberto Garza.
