Men like Harvey Unga, Airese Currie & Terrence Tolliver (my own hero), will live in the hearts of Chicago Bears fans for all eternity. We will never forget them. It's like we looked around - and they were gone :-(

Sometimes I feel like the only way Unga is going to see the field is if the entire team pulls a "Rudy" for him.

"I want Harvey to dress in my place, Coach. He deserves it."

Wow. How powerful is THAT thought? They'll have to make a movie of that one - "Unga's Song." Right now there's not a dry eye in my office (even the boss was sobbing over the "Future Jay Cutler quote" thingie.

Here's Jay addressing the boys in the movie:

But would the $$$ we regain be worth the loss of Peppers? I think we take for granted that the Bears have some of the best D in history. I was fine with Urlacher leaving because it was inevitable, he was nearing the end of his life in the NFL. My question is how many of the Defense players can you lose before the Bears Defense is no longer the "Bears Defense"? It's all a gamble, we may sign some guys just as good, but I'm sticking by Peppers a a key player.

That's a great point. A great coach & GM understand that a roster is constantly evolving. It's like a living/breathing entity. In a sense you are always in a mini-rebuilding mode. New blood in. Old guys out.

I figure great coaches/GM's understand you have to be proactive and not wait until a player's abilities drop like a rock due to age. Pep, like all players, will hit that point at some future year. Under Jerry Angelo and Lovie, we would often be in "crisis mode" on the team. And of course you usually need a bit of time to ramp up a rookie so he can replace a great player. Peppers may "hit the wall" before the end of his contract (he'll be 36 years old then).

So hopefully Emery/Trestman are pro-active guys who will always have a young guy being groomed to step into our veteran's shoes when that time comes to move on with a new player.

I love it. In the "Unga's Song" movie, THIS will be the heart wrenching scene where Jay rallies the men to back a "Rudy Moment" and get Harvey into a "real" game.

So with the $2M saved on Peppers and the $1M saved on Bennett the Bears now have $3M extra to spend....

Remember Emery said no contract extentions during the season so my guess is this is CYA room but I have been wrong before. IMO, he would have been smart to lock up Tillman.

I agree. With how many free agents we have we need to try and lock up a few guys and as long as Tillman doesn't just hit a brick wall skill wise he would be at the top of the list for me. The 3 guys we have that are free agents that could demand big money are Cutler, Melton and Tillman. It would be nice to lock up Tillman so we can at least use the franchise tag as a bargaining tool with the other two. I don't think Cutler is worth 14 million + nor is Melton worth the second year franchise of around 10 million, so hopefully we can figure something out.
