Great site that apparently updates pretty frequently (it had today's cut of Podlesh already built in).

    http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/chicago-bears/cap-hit/

So it appears we have $8.9mm in space at the moment. Not bad considering there could still be some space freed up by reworking deals/cutting players.

So comparatively speaking we were top 5 or 6 in cap mgmt/space with the +5% cap increase and some savings like with Podlesh and some others I'd say we're sitting real pretty or am I missing something? (I'm going on the premise we cut Peppers and let Melton walk).

Weems we should be able to replace. Keeping him over Hester is a mystery to me. I believe the excuse is that Hester only return kicks or punts for TD yet all Weems does is tackle people on STeams to keep them from doing it. Now he may have to tackle Hester too. He's also every bit as bad a receiver as Hester is. So you decide NOT to re-sign one of the biggest big play threats in the league but keep a core STeams only tackler? Hmmmmm

Well of course Weems is an Emery FA signing and Devin was a charter member of the Lovie Smith Admiration Society but that couldn't possibly have a single thing to with it right guys? Got some waterfront property just outside of Scottsdale AZ for sale too if anyone's interested. Water's a little low at the moment so I'm selling it cheap.

I'd be asking Bush to take a pay cut right about now. He's worth keeping but not at his current cap price. If they can find better this summer then he can always be released or even traded later on but get some of that cap money back now. Conte isn't all that pricey for a starter but after that pathetic performance last year asking him to play for a reduced salary wouldn't be out of line and if the boy was smart he'd take it and run.......I mean stay. Bush is at $2.85 mil in salary so I suggest that be reduced to $1.3-$1.5 with ULTBE incentives and we save $1.3-$1.5 mil in cap room there. Conte's paycheck shoots up to $1.379 mil this year because a bonus kicked in based on his number of starts. However based on his play he didn't earn it so cut him back to his vet minimum of $715k, save another $664k and make him earn that boost in pay back by keeping his job. So there's another $2 mil or so gained just by restructuring to smaller deals.

If Pep won't play for a part timers paycheck he has to go and there's another $14 mil and if he will there's $8-$9 mil so there's another $10-$16 mil right there without counting any restructuring of the deals for Cutler, Jennings, Slauson, or Gould all of which could also be done if needed. This year the Bears are far more cap rich than they are cap poor. They just need to use it well.

We may begin to hear some rumors before the weekend is out. On Saturday the party starts and the backroom deals in smoke filled rooms can get done. Oh wait a minute. You probably can't smoke inside any of those buildings any longer. No cigars either. No wonder Ditka retired. LOL

I'm hoping the Free Agent Santa leaves us a fantastic safety and DLman under the Halas Hall FA tree......and maybe some cool "stocking stuffers" too :)

IN fairness, not only does Weems participate in coverage teams, he can also return kicks, thus making his salary more team friendly in a cap league where paying for strictly a return man could be prohibitive and a luxury this team really can't afford. The difference between us making the playoffs and not making the playoffs was not Hester. In fact if you look at Weems averages they are very close to Hesters in the return categories.

I think we've been through this elsewhere but in two years Weems has returned exactly 18 kick offs (16.0 avg.) and one punt (0 yds) so that hardly qualifies him a dual STeams threat does it? And with a contract that paid him over $4.2 mil for 3 years (he has a year to go) he's been one the biggest waste of cap space on this team. Hester has made a little over $1 mil more for his last 2 years and he's returned 76 kicks (27.1 avg) and 58 punts (10.1 avg.). Weems only advantage is 20-24 tackles on STeams and he wasn't even the team leader in that category even though he was the highest paid. So "IN FAIRNESS" whose really been the more valuable player to THIS team?

You know everyone around here is entitled to express their own opinions but if were gonna make statements like this at least back them with facts. I have a real problem with inaccurate info being used to justify a position and that's exactly what you did there. They aren't even close to being comparable as Bears and that's what matters. Weems is no more a dual purpose player than Hester is. If you want to play that card then up 'til 2013 Hester was also a receiver and scored another TD receiving in 2012, one in 2011, and 4 in 2010. So that's 13 TDs since 2010 for Hester and zero for Weems. He's never been anything but a backup to Hester and STeams cover guy and damn expensive one if you ask me.

Even if you want to debate their careers and those numbers being comparable as far as averages the comparison falls apart when you look at Hester 18 KOR/PR TDs, 1 FGR TD, and 1 Super Bowl KOR TD. So that's 20 vs 2 and he hasn't had one since 2010 while Hester has had 7 since then. There's a reason why Hester may end up in the HOF and Weems will be an afterthought as soon as he's out of the game. You simply can't compare the two and their value to their respective team period. Not over two years or their entire careers.

um he's 35 been in the league 14 years and last year he played in 5 games, I think his tank was on E last year. If we were going for a guy like this we might as well re sign P-Nut.
