Chicago Bears season preview: Secondary concern

    Change we can believe in

Now that Jay Cutler owns a shiny (and expensive) new contract, the quarterback has regained the comfort level in Marc Trestman's offense he displayed before injuries derailed his best season in Chicago. Alshon Jeffery continues his meteoric climb to the upper echelon of receivers. Several of Jeffery's better games last season came with Josh McCown under center, but it appears now he's earned Cutler's trust as well.
The additions of Lamarr Houston (in the long term) and Jared Allen (short term) should solidify a porous defensive line. It's only preseason, but that combination along with Jay Ratiff and Stephen Paea on the defensive line and Jon Bostic from his linebacker spot have looked vastly improved stopping the run.

    Biggest concern

The secondary remains a huge concern. A lot of how defensive coordinator Mel Tucker can rotate his aging group will depend on rookie Kyle Fuller's return from an ankle injury. If Fuller's season becomes a wash, it will be a long year in the backend. Tim Jennings and Charles "Peanut" Tillman garner a lot of respect, but they've backpedaled many miles at Soldier Field.
The safety spot might be even worse off. Chris Conte is a question mark even when he's healthy and has dealt with a concussion. M.D Jennings and Ryan Mundy were allowed to walk by teams that needed safety help, so that tells you what their former employers thought of them. Rookie Brock Vereen looks like a fourth-round gem thus far, but the rest is charcoal.

    Training camp surprise

New life for Jimmy Clausen! Who would have thought after not throwing a pass for three regular seasons, Clausen could look competent. Given Cutler's injury history, there is a more than good chance we'll hear an announcer utter the words, "Jogging out is the Bears' starting quarterback this afternoon, Jimmy Clausen." Get pumped, Chicago!
The injury to Marquess Wilson was a bummer. The Bears were primed to play jump ball this season. But the injury to the second-year pro gave us a chance to dust off Santonio Holmes, who is always a fun wild card.

What we'll be saying in February

Alshon Jeffery is the next great NFL receiver, and if the Bears ever got back to form on defense, they would be an elite team once again.
Around The NFL's predicted finish: Second place in NFC North, No. 12 in Around The NFL's Power Index.

I thought 1st place before PS, now I'm thinking 2nd, and I'd love to be going back to 1st after the first half dozen games.

Another article by a guy who really doesn't follow the team.

I'm not aware the Fuller ankle injury is serious enough to threaten his season. Anyone else get any other impression. From what I can see we're in good shape at CB both starters and backups.

If M.D. Jennings even makes the final cut it will be primarily as a STeams guy but I'm not giving even that much of a chance. Mundy will probably never be a standout SS but most anything is an improvement over Wright and he's all of that plus he has experience. Vereen may have been a gem of a pick for a 4th rounder but so far he's still behind Conte and McCray on the depth chart and not ready to make an impact yet. If Conte can stay healthy I expect a good year from him.

The key to success in the secondary is still the pass rush. If it's not better than last year by leaps and bounds then it wouldn't matter who we have back there. They'd all look bad.

I would really like to know how Fuller is doing. He was a player that really stood out to me the short time he was out there. As far as the backups, Hayden has looked like a let down. At least I expected more than what I saw from him this preseason. I know Frey is gone, but what happen to him this offseason? I expected something out of him and he vanished.

As far as the safeties, who are we expecting to start? Mundy for sure, then its between Conte (concussion) and McCray. I like Vereen as much as the next guy, but he isn't a starter yet.

Speaking of starters, in 2005 we started a rookie at QB in the form of Kyle Orton.

Next thing you know we were in the SUPERBOWL.

Where the supposed real starter Rex Grossman let the game slip out of his rainsoaked hands.

As far as starting Vereen ... its been done before. Ask Kyle Long.

If no one saw him in a walking boot, I say it's all precautionary they already know what the kid can do it's a long season.

Frey has had a hamstring injury for weeks and hasn't been able to play so they were forced to cut him. Hayden has been a bit of a disappointment in games but he was tearing it up earlier in camp. He could well lose out to one of the younger guys like Hurst or Wilson.

Mundy will start at SS and Conte at FS if he's cleared to play and if the concussion isn't serious he should be. McCray will probably start if Conte doesn't. Vereen probably won't see anything but coverage on STeams for a bit.
