Yeah, if he is healthy & if he gets his head on straight he could be our #3 WR. I like the signing. My guess is it's a low risk, high reward 1-year deal but I'm sure we'll find out soon.

Hah! Better direct him to my girlfriends lawn, she was the one who called me and told me about it. As a former Hawkeye, I don't want that dirty Boilermaker on my lawn anyway (I kid, sort of....).

Agreed, given our cap space situation you have to imagine that this is another one of Emery's "prove it" vet deals. Not much risk attached and we potentially get a talented, if mercurial, receiver. Something new to watch for in the third pre-season game for sure.

I didn't even realize that Holmes wasn't on anyone's roster. Hopefully, he will feel indebted to Emery and Co. for giving him another chance, since it seems like there wasn't much of a market for his services. We shall see...stay tuned, kiddies!!!

Lol I couldn't say, but it certainly seems like it in this case. She wasn't a Bears fan before she met me, but I do have to commend her on the zeal with which she has adopted the Bears (she was a former Cowgirl.....the defection should come as no surprise given this information).

Bye, bye Eric Weems. Would have been nice to say glad to know you but it wasn't.

OK, another vet WR who can actually catch a football. I like the way we're aggressive as far as filling in the gaps with productive players. With Wilson out all we really have left with decent experience is Morgan. Holmes could help.

Ron Antonelli/Getty ImagesSantonio Holmes, who played in 11 games for the Jets last season, has agreed to terms with the Bears, according to a source.

The Chicago Bears agreed to terms with former New York Jets wide receiver Santonio Holmes, a team source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

Holmes worked out for the Bears earlier this week.

Holmes, 30, caught 23 passes for 456 yards and one touchdown last season in 11 games for the Jets. He played in just four games in 2012 before suffering a Lisfranc injury.

His best season in the NFL came with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2009 when he posted a career-high 79 receptions for 1,248 yards. Holmes was also named MVP of Super Bowl XLIII.

ESPNChicago.com's Jeff Dickerson contributed to this report.

He was good back with Hines Ward for the Steelers. Hopefully he can look still play and with all the attention on Marshall and Jeffries be a solid compliment. If he can play anywhere near the level he use to play M. Wilson may not be the 3rd WR this year either.

I think he use to return kicks if I remember correctly. He is older now though and much like Hester I am sure he has lost a step so..... not sure how well he would do the returns but probably no worse than Weems. This may be the end of the Weems experiment if Holmes can still Play

When they gave him a tryout recently I thought this could be a low risk and high reward opportunity. Holmes has the talent, when healthy. His issues are "head issues" rather than talent issues. At least the talent is there if he keeps his head screwed on right. The other guys we have on our roster for the #3 slot, after we lost Marquis Wilson, are mediocre talents at best. I know some here want to believe otherwise, but they're lower-tier players and that's reality. If we want to maximise this offense then yes, that #3 WR is important. More important than having a mediocre talented guy there. Holmes could be a significant upgrade......if he can keep on track mentally. The guy came out of a horrific background growing up. He does have "issues" but maybe the Bears are the kind of team that can help him stay on track. Brandon Marshall could be a help in this too.

Angelo never would have done this. O Lovie be telling us somebody has to step up, he just never understood it was him and Angelo who needed to step up

It really is amazing the type of FA talent we are attracting in the past couple years. Consequently, it boggles my mind how we were unable to attract/sign even serviceable players on the offensive side of the ball for so long under Lovie/Angelo. While we have no idea what Santonio Holmes will ultimately bring, based on his expected role in the offense there really is almost no downside to this signing. These past few years have really been like a breath of fresh air for Bears fans, in my opinion, now we can only hope the wins follow (pray to the injury gods/lady luck!).

Im not sure i get this signing. He could be an excellent receiver for the slot but I feel Josh Morgan would have been fine in that role. I would think Emery would have been looking for someone that could do returns. And from the looks of it Holmes last punt return was in 2010, last meaningful duty was in 2008 and hasn't done a kick return since his rookie year of 2006. Doesn't mean he can't do it but I'm scratching my head.
