That is the prospect I had in mind when I first heard we signed Houston (loved that move by Phil). Having a monster 290-300 pound DE who is a great run defender will help Shea a lot on that side at SLB. Shea should do a lot better as a pass rusher and be a lot less of a run liability with a guy like Houston in front of or beside him.

That is EXACTLY what Houston said in his radio interview yesterday. When asked on how he would like to play in the Bears scheme he said that he should be turned loose and that the best use of his skills on passing downs would be to pair him up with a LB on the OT and make the OT choose who to block.

I'm an NCSU fan & when he was here he was by far our best pass rusher. Wasn't bad against the run for someone his size either. Nice signing. Things are getting interesting peoples.

Nice move, but getting a stud DE in the draft is still a priority and this shouldn't change BPA D philosophy.

I'm loving Emery's moves so far, the potential of our defensive pass rush is looking great so far compared to last year and I know there's more signings to come in the draft to infuse more youth and keep building on and around who have already. .....gotta get Peanut back, I've always said that when him and Jennings are on the field together our secondary is just that much better.

So here is the PFF Breakdown of the new Bears DE's compared to last years:

Willie Young: 801 snaps, grd +7, rsh grd 4.9, run grd 5.1, scks 4, hits 8, hurries 48, batted passes 4, stops 31
    L Houston: 1049 snaps, grd +11.4, rsh grd -1.6, run grd 14.9, scks 6, hits 16, hurries 41 batted passed 0, stops 54

    Peppers: 865 snaps, grd -4.4, rsh grd -3.6, run grd -2.7, sacks 7, hits 6, hurries 27, batted passes 3, stops 26
    Bass: 317 snaps , grd -7.9, rush grd -6.3, run grd, -2, sacks 1, hits 2, hurries 12, batted passes 0, stops 9
    Wootton: 327 snaps, grd -9.6, rush grd -8.9, run grd -.1, sacks 1, hits 1, hurries 6, batted passees 2, stops 7
    She: 661 snaps, grd -28.4 rush grd -12.2, run grd -19.2, sacks 5, hits 9, hurries 19, batted passes 0, stops 14

Anyone that isn't batshit crazy excited over Houston/Young and the FA moves to this point isn't going to be happy at all. Btw, Bass was the 2nd best DE on the team last year, that is a hell of a great pickup and he's still here and She won't be taking snaps from him in the rotation anymore.

I like this pick up, it gives us another DE who is still young and can improve. Now I'm less concern about us "reaching" on a DE.

Maybe...maybe not. Either way you still have to win battles to get the QB, and none of our guys did it as well as him and Houston did last year. He's basically Michael Johnson only we got him for 9 million instead of 43 million.

Sounds a lot like a Brown and Izzy combination. If they can land a Tommie Harris type in the Draft, then we could get back to being respectable.

Good point about Bass, with Shea moving to LB it'll only help Bass improve and grow more and more at the DE position and he's still young.

The Lions replaced Young (positive rating and younger) with Darrell Tapp who had a negative rating and will be in his 9th year !

I like it; I like it a lot. It's cool to watch the plan unfold, and we won't fully see it until the draft, but you can see it coming. Take what we've done here and lets take a leap just for the fun of it. With all the crap that has been given based on the production of Shea at DE, what if this kid switches to LB and starts to play like a 1st round pick, like he should have been there all along. That very possibly could happen. There have been many of us suggesting that he should be a LBer all along. He never has been big enough or strong enough to be a DE in my opinion, but he's got great size for a LB, and he's got the speed to be a LB.

I'm drinkin the Kool-Aid and I'm starting to get pretty excited about this Defense. Just sayin.:headbang:

Emery should be silencing the haters with these signings. Nice score with Young and Houston.
