    Packers - Bears Preview

Aaron Rodgers delivered a bitter ending to the Chicago Bears' 2013 season, but he returns to Soldier Field after one of the worst performances of his career.
The Green Bay quarterback will seek to bounce back while denying the Bears a third consecutive victory and their first at home this season Sunday.
It looked like the Packers might fall short of a fifth consecutive playoff berth in December when they faced fourth-and-8 from the Chicago's 48-yard line with 46 seconds left. Instead, Rodgers connected with a wide-open Randall Cobb for a touchdown to give Green Bay a 33-28 victory over its archrival and the NFC North title.
Rodgers and the Packers have some early ground to make up after starting 1-2, and they were largely ineffective offensively in their 19-7 loss at Detroit last Sunday.
Green Bay was held scoreless in the final three quarters and finished with 223 yards, its second-lowest total in the last six seasons. Rodgers had 162 for his second-fewest in any game that he's been healthy.
The Packers also allowed a 40-yard fumble return for a touchdown and a safety.
"We haven't been a sharp offense. I haven't been as sharp," Rodgers said. "We've all got to do better."
Rodgers will face a Bears defense that's dealt with a bevy of injuries but had enough depth to pull out a 27-19 win at the New York Jets on Monday night. Ryan Mundy returned an interception 45 yards for a score on the second play from scrimmage but was in and out of the game after suffering a stinger.
Safety Chris Conte, who was burned by Cobb for that winning touchdown, also has an ailing shoulder. The Bears (2-1) played without defensive lineman Jeremiah Ratliff (concussion), linebacker Shea McClellin (hand) and veteran cornerback Charles Tillman, who is out for the season with a torn right triceps.
"That's a credit to our coaches," Mundy said. "We get coached hard day in and day out. And we make sure that everyone is ready to play.
"And I think that has been evident over the past two weeks."
McClellin has been ruled out for this game and the statuses of Ratliff, Mundy and Conte are unknown. Coach Marc Trestman was "not optimistic" center Roberto Garza and left guard Matt Slauson could end their two-game absences due to ankle injuries, and fullback Tony Fiammetta has a hamstring injury.
The Bears have lost seven of eight in the NFL's longest-running rivalry, including the NFC championship game in January 2011, but earned that lone win in Trestman's first matchup Nov. 4.
Rodgers broke his collarbone on the opening drive of that 27-20 defeat on a sack by McClellin. He didn't return to action until the win at Soldier Field, throwing for 318 yards and two touchdowns in the victory.
Rodgers has averaged 282.0 yards while totaling 14 TDs and four interceptions in his last five full games against Chicago. Bears quarterback Jay Cutler has 18 interceptions -- seven more than against any other opponent -- and 11 touchdowns in 10 career meetings with Green Bay, including the postseason.
He missed last season's victory over the Packers because of a torn groin muscle.
Like Green Bay, Chicago is trying to get its top rusher back on track.
The Bears' Matt Forte has 54 yards in the last two games after running for 82 in their Week 1 loss to Buffalo, but he's second on the team with 19 receptions for 145 yards. Chicago has a league-low 192 yards on the ground and has been held to 106 in the last two games.
Forte topped 100 yards in both meetings last season, totaling 235, and added nine catches for 101 yards.
Green Bay's Eddie Lacy has 113 rushing yards this season after gaining 1,178 and winning the league's offensive rookie of the year award. Lacy had 216 yards in last season's two matchups, including 150 in the loss.
The Packers haven't topped 80 yards on the ground in 2014 after reaching triple digits in all but four games last season.
Green Bay has not started 0-3 on the road since dropping its first four there in 2005. The Packers haven't lost three in a row on the road in one season since Nov. 28-Dec. 19, 2010, but are seeking a fifth consecutive win in Chicago, including the NFC title game.
The Bears haven't opened with back-to-back home defeats since an 0-3 start in 2004. Their last set of consecutive losses at Soldier Field came at the end of 2012.
This game marks the return of former All-Pro Julius Peppers to Chicago, where he had 37 1/2 sacks from 2010-13. He has one this season, while his replacement Jared Allen has yet to record one for Chicago.

Packers at Bears: How they match up

    QuarterbackAdvantage
Since taking over as the starter in 2008, Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers is No. 2 in the NFL in 100-plus passer-rating performances with 52. Rodgers is elite. He's experienced slight accuracy problems over the opening three weeks, but Rodgers has still thrown five touchdowns to one interception (95.1 QB rating). Bears quarterback Jay Cutler has a combined six touchdown pass and zero picks in the last two weeks. Cutler appears to be dialed in, but he owns just one lifetime win against the Packers.[IMG]
    Running backAdvantage
The Bears' ground game is scuffling, but Matt Forte remains one of the most versatile, all-purpose tailbacks in the league. Forte has 18 career games with 150-plus yards from scrimmage. But he's gained only 54 yards on 25 carries in the past two games. Green Bay running back Eddie Lacy is a bruiser, and rushed for 1,178 yards in 2013 as a rookie. However, Lacy is averaging 3.1 yards per carry with zero touchdowns.[IMG]
    Wide receiversAdvantage
Bears wideout Alshon Jeffery caught eight passes for 105 yards in the Week 3 victory in New York. Brandon Marshall (questionable) has four touchdown receptions already on the season. Jeffery and Marshall are considered the best WR tandem in the NFL. Green Bay's top two receivers, Randall Cobb and Jordy Nelson, are formidable. Nelson leads the team with 23 grabs for 351 yards and one touchdown. Cobb has three scores. Rodgers doesn't seem to have much faith in Nos. 3/4 options Jarrett Boykin and Davante Adams. Jeremy Kerley has eight receptions for 60 yards.[IMG]
    Tight endAdvantage
Chicago's Martellus Bennett is quietly piecing together the best season of his career with 15 receptions for 107 yards and four touchdowns. Bennett is becoming a prime target in the red zone. Dante Rosario is a serviceable No. 2. The Packers list rookie Richard Rodgers as their starters, although Andrew Quarless is probably the best tight end on the roster. Green Bay badly misses Jermichael Finley.[IMG]
    Offensive lineAdvantage
Even minus two starters (center Roberto Garza and left guard Matt Slauson) the Bears have still managed to protect Cutler and surrender only seven sacks in 121 passing attempts. However, the Bears are struggling on the ground, and the offensive line is always subject to a certain degree of blame when that occurs. Green Bay is having issues with its line. Rodgers has been sacked nine times and rarely seems comfortable in the pocket.[IMG]
    Defensive lineAdvantage
The most improved element of the Bears' defense, the line play of Willie Young (four sacks), Stephen Paea (two sacks) and rookies Will Sutton and Ego Ferguson, has been inspiring. The Bears are still waiting for Jared Allen (questionable) to emerge, although Allen did force a key fumble in the Week 2 win against the 49ers. Green Bay is the 30th-ranked run defense. The Packers' defensive line has contributed one sack in three games.[IMG]
    LinebackersAdvantage
The Packers have an impressive array of talent at linebacker with Clay Matthews, Julius Peppers, A.J. Hawk and Brad Jones. Matthews has 51 career sacks. Peppers is responsible for 119.5 sacks in 12-plus seasons. Hawk ranks No. 1 in Green Bay history (since 1975) with 1,047 tackles. The Bears linebacker trio of Lance Briggs, D.J. Williams and Jon Bostic all played at a high-level against the Jets. The arrow is pointing up for this group. Williams had 9 tackles last week; Bostic had 13. This looks to be an even matchup. Coin flip goes to the Bears because Green Bay is unable to stop the run.[IMG]
    SecondaryAdvantage
The strength of the Packers' defense. Green Bay is solid at cornerback with Tramon Williams and Sam Shields and on the upswing at safety with youngsters Ha Ha Clinton-Dix and Micah Hyde. The Packers rank No. 6 against the pass (198.3). Bears are banged up at safety with Chris Conte (questionable). Ryan Mundy is dealing with a shoulder injury but is expected to be fine. Mundy had a pick-six at MetLife Stadium. Rookie Kyle Fuller has intercepted a combined three balls in the past two weeks.[IMG]
    Special teamsAdvantage
The Bears had a much better effort in Week 3, especially on the coverage teams. Place-kicker Robbie Gould is automatic. Coordinator Joe DeCamillis appears to be coaching up the inexperienced core of special-teamers. Bears continue to have little success in the return game. Green Bay's Cobb is dangerous on punt returns. DuJuan Harris and Hyde give the Packers a one-two punch on kickoff returns. Punter Tim Masthay has a 41.2-yard net average. Another close one to call.[IMG]
    CoachingAdvantage
Credit goes to Bears coach Marc Trestman for his team winning two straight road games. Trestman is 1-1 against Green Bay. Defensive coordinator Mel Tucker's side of the ball is vastly improved. Coaching and player development has played a role in that. Packers head coach Mike McCarthy is 89-52-1 overall and 11-6 lifetime vs. the Bears. McCarthy won a Super Bowl in 2010.[IMG]
    OverallAdvantage
Cutler is 1-8 all-time against Green Bay. That needs to change. Sunday presents the best opportunity in recent memory for the Bears to knock off the rival Packers. The game is in Chicago. Green Bay is 1-2. The Packers can't stop the run. And Cutler is on a roll. Yes, the Bears are banged up with Allen, Marshall and Conte listed as game-time decisions. But Green Bay looks to be in trouble after a bad Week 3 loss to Detroit.[IMG]
