The Bears at least considered reuniting the top of the Broncos’ 2006 draft class but indications are the team will not sign veteran tight end Tony Scheffler after putting him through a workout at Halas Hall.

An NFL source said the Bears will not add Scheffler, a close friend of quarterback Jay Cutler, despite an open spot on the 53-man roster. Denver drafted Scheffler in the second round in 2006, in between choosing Cutler and wide receiver Brandon Marshall.

The Lions released Scheffler on Tuesday after he was cleared to return from a concussion suffered earlier this season. Joseph Fauria, an undrafted rookie free agent, has emerged as a major contributor in Detroit and Scheffler had only seven receptions for 82 yards.

Chances are the Bears will sign a linebacker with Lance Briggs expected to miss six weeks with a small fracture in his left shoulder, an injury that is expected to force rookie Khaseem Greene or veteran Blake Costanzo into the starting lineup.

Keenan Clayton, Larry Grant, Brian Rolle and Julian Stanford were part of the 11-man workout.

Grant, who spent the previous two seasons with the 49ers, has the most NFL experience and has been considered a strong special teams player. Grant played 16 games for the 49ers last season. He started three games for San Francisco in 2011 and previously spent three seasons with the Rams where he made eight starts. Grant was suspended for the first four games of the season for violating the NFL’s policy on performance-enhancing drugs.

The Bears also worked out five wide receivers, included Terrence Toliver, who spent the offseason and training camp with the team. Also present were Kamar Aiken, Danny Coale, Cordell Roberson and Roy Roundtree. Former Northwestern quarterback Mike Kafka was involved, likely to throw to Scheffler and the receivers.

The Bears have only 52 players under contract and based on their tight cap situation and the off week, it would not be surprising if the club waited until Monday, when practice will resume, to sign a player. That way, the team saves a small amount of cap room by not paying a player for this week. There is an open spot on the practice squad as wide receiver Ricardo Lockette was released earlier in the week.

Jeez, I woulda been stoked if they would've gotten scheffler. When they don't have Ebon Britton in as a second TE (which I've been hoping the Bears would do, since seeing the Lions pull it off last year, and Carimi giving his best performance, before forced into a guard spot), this would open up many more passing opportunities. I don't have much faith McCown is going to perform well for more than a few games at most, but ya might as well give the guy every opportunity to perform well.

On another note, this defense is a tire fire, and character issues be damned, let's try to get a guy like Ratliff.

I agree, Ratliff is a issue, it was reported down here that he got into Jerry's face and almost punched him. It was also said that they(his own staff) thought he was done for the year, but if he's been cleared why not bring him in and kick the tires.
