Yeah, that's what puzzled me. But how do you sit a top 10 C and let a bottom 5 C play instead? Especially when you can save 2/3 salary at the same time! Like I said... a head scratcher

I love the move...but I want him to start! And if you want him to start when garza retires...why just 1 year?

This makes perfect sense and it's a sharp move on both sides. The Bears now have their replacement for Garza in place and that's one less position to worry about in the draft and de la Puente has put himself in a position to learn the offense in a backup role and take over next year. Like Slauson, I don't think there's much doubt that they won't extend his deal later this year or early next. In the meantime the Bears get a versatile and experienced backup on the cheap side.

I kind of wondered why he hadn't signed elsewhere and why the Bears weren't pursuing him when he hadn't. My guess is that like with Britton, he was told of their interest and that when the time was right they'd make good on it. Playing for Kromer again had to be a big attractor in the process. They guy isn't old for an OC so next year at age 30 he could easily be in line for a more lucrative 3-4 year deal. This was another nice move on Emery's part to close a hole in the depth chart.

You say he is the starter to keep his value at whatever level it is at.... to try and trade him.

Best player should play or you may have issues in the locker room. I know Garza is a captain but this could be interesting, maybe reading between the lines is they still plan on starting Garza as long as he doesnt get beat out by La Puente:10 4 4v[1]:

It may turn out the other way around since both can also backup at OG. Emery is making damn sure he has enough vet depth at as many positions as he can especially when he can buy it on sale. Getting this guy for a league minimum was a true bargain.

Would you give anything for a 35 year old #28 rated C? If that is the strategy, it's not well thought out

That thought had crossed my mind. Play de la Puente and have Garza back him up. I like that, but that's not what they say the plan is, and a starter making 1/3 of his backup won't sit well either. My brain hurts trying to make sense of this one.

I agree completely Soul. Garza will start this year & Puente will backup both OG & OC. Maybe LS as well. Now we have depth at OL by this signing & Britton signing. Next year Garza will probably retire & Puente will be resigned to 3-4 year deal as our starting OC. Very good signing IHMO.

interesting, so I guess the team isn't that sold on Boggs, but then why did they sign him also?

LOL, I have to wonder if that's not too far from the truth. It seems odd to me you would sign a younger and better/equal player for LESS money to be a backup.

Sounds great on paper but it's a vet min deal right? Like McCown's? Meaning you can't re-sign him until the start of FA next year right?

You know... That was going through my mind also. If that's the case, it makes less sense. Sign a guy to sit on the bench that you can't sign again next year and might lose. For some reason though, I think I remember that you can sign a guy for two years at vet minimum and then the third year you run into the McCown situation. Not for sure, but that's what the little hamster in my head says. Plus, I see them extending him for several years. At least I would hope.

BiH, there's something here in this situation we don't have all the facts on I'm guessing. If I recall correctly from the McCown thing, the rule is on a one year vet min contract the team gets a cap break but can't officially re-sign the player until the start of the new league year the following March. Carrot and stick thing. They can negotiate but can't put ink to paper hitch ensures the player that other teams can make offers to him if they want.

Does DLP have an injury concern? If not, I don't get why you would sign him this way to sit behind Garza. It's cheap insurance yes but I'm sure DLP wants to start and be the future starter. Am I wrong?

Veteran competition for our weakest spot on the OL? I'll take it.

Good point MP & you may well be right. Hopefully Emery learned from that contact & threw a bonus in or something that makes it different than McCowns. Also I don't think we have to worry about losing him to another team because he over played his contract (Like McCown did), unless of course Garza gets hurt. I think Puente realizes that he has a chance to get a decent contract & start next year plus he wants to play for Kromer. I think it's win win. We will see where it goes from here but I still think it's a very good signing. Now we don't "need" to draft a OC or OG.
