Observations from the first hour of Wednesday's Bears practice
    Wednesday, July 31, 2013 10:00 a.m. CDT
Bears beat writer Kevin Fishbain offered these observations from the first hour of Wednesday's Bears practice via Twitter:
    • Jonathan Scott has ice on his right knee ... Bears confirm signing of DE Josh Williams, terminate contract of Turk McBride.
    • Not sure where Tim Jennings is, Zack Bowman opened as CB opposite Tillman ... Cory Brandon 1st team LT ... James Brown at guard.
    • Attempt 2 at Vine with TE catch drills.
    • Bears OLT Jermon Bushrod in shorts and still wearing a walking boot ... injured his calf on Monday. Marshall back and practicing.
    • The Bears' new look at linebacker: Briggs, two new vets, two draft picks. My story on the dynamic in the LB room

BOURBONNAIS, Ill. -- New Chicago Bears linebacker D.J. Williams was carted off the practice field with an undisclosed injury during a busy Wednesday morning practice.

Among the other news and notes from Wednesday:

    • Cornerback Tim Jennings was not at practice for an undisclosed reason. Zack Bowman took first-team reps in his place.

    • Receiver Brandon Marshall and defensive end Cheta Ozougwu returned to practice after sitting out Monday.

    • Starting left tackle Jermon Bushrod did not practice two days after suffering a right calf strain. He was seen Wednesday in a walking boot. Cory Brandon and Eben Britton took reps in his place at left tackle.

    • The Bears signed defensive lineman Josh Williams to a three-year contract to replace the injured Turk McBride, who was lost for the season Monday with a ruptured Achilles tendon. Williams, an undrafted free agent out of Kansas, attended the Bears rookie minicamp. The Bears terminated the contract of McBride and he received an injury settlement.

    • Offensive lineman Jonathan Scott got banged up at practice and was seen watching practice with hisright knee taped up.

Check back for updates on all these stories throughout the day.

ESPNChicago.com's Jeff Dickerson contributed to this report.

Day 6 of camp but only day 5 of practice, so yesterday didn't happen.

The Bears had a scheduled day off yesterday and, no doubt, the players appreciated the breather. You can be sure that the coaches didn't take much time off and nor did the media; see what they reported in today's Den if you haven't already had a look.
For a reminder of what went down in practices 1-4, check out WCG's Training Camp recaps for Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, as well as the corresponding roundups in the Den (covering Fri / Sat / Sun / Mon). Sam goes over which Bears players had impressed early on here.
Key stories coming into today's session: Will Jermon Bushrod's calf strain have cleared up? Can the O-line improve on its patchy early performances in pass protection? How will the RG and WR battles pan out? Who will step up now that Sedrick Ellis and Turk McBride are out of the running for the DL group?
What else will you be looking out for?
To borrow from myself borrowing from Schweickert borrowing me borrowing from Lester:
Here's a link to the entire Chicago Bears training camp schedule.
The Chicago Bears website also has a handy Training Camp FAQ which can be found here.
Please keep in mind that Open Threads are rated WCG-MA, so you may see a naughty word or two in the comment section. Here's a link to our community guidelines so you know what is still out of bounds. It may be an open thread, but we still should act fairly civilized, we're not Yahoos.
    Now enjoy the open thread!

some other odds and ends from the twitter verse, E Bennett getting a lot of looks from Cutler, and looking good.
Jeffery had the ball stripped from...well guess who?
At one point both Brown and Long started on the 1's OL Brown LG Long RG
When Slauson got back w/the 1's Brown went back to RG
Bostic w/the 1's at MLB w/Williams out. Costanzo 2/the 2's at MLB...LHolmes not impressed w/Bostic's play stating Williams needs to get back soon
McCown got int'd by Sherrick McM

All this thanks to Chicago Bears Buzz, LHolmes, MOoooooon Mullins, ZZaidman Brad Biggs etc.

The full tweet from Holmes reads:

    Laurence Holmes ‏@LaurenceWHolmes 1m
I would suggest he get back soon. #WallyPipp >>>“@AdamHoge: Rookie Jon Bostic filling in at MLB on first team with D.J. Williams out.”

The WallyPipp reference in there actually indicates that Jon Bostic is looking very good in filling the MLB spot. The reference is to when Pipp lost his starting job to Lou Gehrig when he sat out a game for a headache. Or at least that's how the story goes.

Cutler TD pass and more from practice
    Wednesday, July 31, 2013 11:26 a.m. CDT
More observations from Bears beat writer Kevin Fishbain, this time from the second hour of practice:
    • Cutler hits a leaping Alshon Jeffery for a touchdown. The second-year wideout continuing his solid camp.
    • Second biggest cheer of the day comes when Matt Blanchard hits Josh Lenz on a long pass down the far sideline. Some love for the 3rd team.
    • With DJ Williams out, rookie Jon Bostic getting his first go with the 1s at MLB...Sherrick McManis picked off McCown...Isaiah Frey with a PD
    • Shea McClellin with a wicked spin move to beat J'Marcus Webb. Drew some ooohs and ahhhs.
    • This is the longest time the Bears have spent consecutively in 11-on-11. Trestman has a strong emphasis on avoiding pre-snap penalties.

Blanchard looking good, McCown not so much, no real suprise.

If Blanchard advances enough to be a #2, I hope we cut McCown, who can always be brought back if needed, to open another roster spot for a young guy we need to groom (Mills, Wilson, etc.)

Guy talking on 1000 espn said the OL was UGLY w/out Bushrod.
Also said Wootton and Peae are really looking good this year, and it's evident they both put in a lot of work in the offseason.
Joe Anderson and Marquis Wilson are the up and coming WR's. He is saying that there is no way Wilson is 184 lb's. Anderson he said is legit, said Wilson more likely a PS guy.

Jimmors two ways to look at that, maybe three. Either Shea is getting a lot better, or Webb has not stepped up, or maybe it's both.

I refused to acknowledge either of those possibilities. Either Shea got marginally better, since it doesnt take much to beat Webb, or Webb got worse, and thats saying A LOT. Either way...meh.
