The other one went splitsville. Now where were we ? Oh yeah ... FA and the draft.

Next to last ranked Defense. Everyone knows what is needed.

let me save this thread for you JJ:

    FA:
Cutler killed the cap so I'm not going to name many names, but most guys are not going to be name worthy anyways:
2DT(one being collins and then one of the two(ratliff/melton)
2 DE(one being Wootton) the other, whoever
2 MLB: DJ Williams and whoever
    2 cb's whoever
    2 safeties whoever
    1 qb McCown
1 TE Fendi, he's cheap and they like him, they'll pick up another in the draft)
    1T, Britton
    1G/C Boggs
    FA Longsnapper
    15 nothing special FA's

    Team before the draft:
    Cutler/McCown
    Forte/Ford
    Bushrod/Mills/Britton/JLong/Slauson/KLong/Brown/Boggs
    DaOD/Fendi
    BM/AJ/MWill/TTolliver
    Wootton/Bass/FA/Paea/Collins/Ratliff/FA
    Briggs/Bostic/Shea/Greene/DJ/FA
    Jennings/FA/FA
    Conte/FA/FA
    FA longsnapper
    K Gould
    P Buttheads son/Podless

    Draft:

    14 DE Truitt
    2nd DT Arron Donald
    3rd TE Richard Rogers
    4th CB Aaron Colvin
    5th S Isaiah Lewis
    6th CB Andre Hall
    6th S Dezmen Southward

I see the team trading back at least once, but I really don't know when/where so I'm not going to bother.
    UFDA: WR's, RB's, TE's, P's

    Team after draft:
    QB: Cutler/McCown/UDFA
    RB: Forte/Ford/UDFA
    Bushrod/Mills/Britton/JLong/Slauson/KLong/Brown/Boggs
    DaOD/Rogers/Fendi
    BM/AJ/MWill/TTolliver/UDFA/UDFA
    Wootton/Truitt/Bass/FA/Paea/Collins/Ratliff/Donald
    Biggs/Bostic/Shea/Greene/DJ/FA
    Jennings/FA/FA/Colvin/Hall
    Conte/FA/FA/Lewis/Southward
    FA Longsnapper
    K Gould
    P Buttheads son

And we have a few positions open to fill via FA/UDFA depending how how teams cut

1 I think it all depends on what D they want to run and what they do in FA. Right now I'd go BPA of DT/DE/CB-S, maybe even MLB, call me crazy I know it's not a top need, but you don't find good MLB's in the 2nd and later rounds(see Bostic). The elite athletes needed to play MLB are normally gone in the mid round 1st rounds.

I'd take a shot at HaHa, but I'd leave all the CB's alone.

Thanks RIC for the help ... hey Bro I found this out ...

ESPN NFL draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. revealed his first mock draft on Wednesday, with Chicago using its first-round pick to select Florida State’s Timmy Jernigan at No. 14.
The move would certainly make sense if Jernigan, widely regarded as the draft’s best defensive tackle, is still available because he fits Chicago’s scheme. But the question for Bears general manager Phil Emery might be whether Jernigan “transcends scheme” as he so often likes to say.
A junior, Jernigan led Florida State with 11 tackles for lost yardage last season and is considered one of the draft’s premier run stuffers. Kiper ranks Jernigan at No. 10 on his Big Board, while Todd McShay of Scouts Inc. lists him as No. 7 in his top 32.
    McShay wrote this about Jernigan:
Jernigan performed well in the Seminoles' BCS title game victory over Auburn, recording nine tackles, although he appeared gassed at times in the fourth quarter and had to come out of the game for a stretch. He is a classic 3-technique with good first-step quickness and good range versus the run, and is a very disruptive player.

Where we pick at the most may not fall to us.

On the otherhand what Halas Hall does in FA may make that a moot point.

Whose out there in FA at DT ?

True. But Jernigan? He was gassed for that whole last drive by Auburn. He's been widely criticized for that. I see him dropping. Not that I'd be angry with getting him, but I've seen huge differences in his stock.

Jernigan is going to play in, I would guess, a few post games and then have the combine to prove his conditioning, if he comes into those out of shape and gassed, then he'll drop.

zelezo, you're right he is a JR so he won't. I've read somethings, and while the sports writers and talk show hosts are blasting him, the actual college football guys have him raising on the boards.
Kiper has him ahead of nix(by 1), ahead of HaHa, and doesn't even have Hagemen in the first round. If guys like Aaron Donald and Hagemen and Truitt are in the 2nd, I think I wouldn't be to upset about getting Clinton-Dix in the first, but expect Emery to prove again he's the smartest guy in the room and take a guy like Pryor CB that is right now projected to be in the mid 20's.

Ric, I respect you and your opinion. You're confident and stick to your guns. However, I wouldn't take what the draft experts say as Gospel right now. Just like everyone else, they buy into hype, especially towards the end. The rankings are pretty fluid, case in point, Nix was the highest ranked tackle for a long long time.

If we can get Hageman in the second, I'm gonna be ecstatic. But how I see it and have read, I don't see either he or Jernigan being good value at 14 right now.

Oh and remember what Bill Walsh said about drafting:
"Never matters where we pick them, it only
    matters how they play."

Zel, I'm just going on what I read and hear, the draft, especially w/Emery is a complete and total crap shoot. Which is why I could see them going CB at 14 that projects as a mid 20's guy.

It's all way to early for anyone to say, the senior games have to be played and the combine/interviews have to happen. But keep this in mind, Emery LOVES combine guys, he'll weight that far more then he'll weight on field production.

He's an old scout. Scouts are taught to look for athleticism first and then go from there so I can see why. Luckily, I don't think he will fall for a pool jumper.

    Agree
If you take Ha Ha in the first round you can easily get a real solid DT in the 2nd round. I don't see a safety worth taking in the 2nd or 3rd rounds

With the injurys we had last year on defense ... pretty much the starting defense ...

whos getting better from injurys ? That has to be a key issue.

Melton ? Wooten ? If these guys are good to go for traing camp ...

do we spend draft picks on those spots ?

What would a healthy 2013 defense look like in 2014 ?

Yes I know we have drafted 50'000 safetys during the Angelo/Lovie era ...

but now we may need to draft safetys in the Emery/Trestman era.

I'd go right for the fuckin jugular this time ... no bullshit 5-7 draft pick afterthoughts.

    DT round one.

Safety round two ... right here. Find us the ten year Pro-Bowler Emery.

Round three ? Fuck if I know.

One of the reasons I wouldn't be to worried about when you get a DT/DE or anything is is this type of mock:

    http://walterfootball.com/draft2014.php
    1) Chicago Bears: Darqueze Dennard, CB, Michigan State
    2) ChiChicago Bears: Aaron Donald, DT, Pittsburgh
    3) Chicago Bears: De'Anthony Thomas, RB, Oregon
    4) Chicago Bears: Chris Smith, DE, Arkansas

Now I wouldn't take a RB at 3rd, QB or TE are the only O players I would take in this draft. But what you see is the team fills it's DL and DB needs, and still has 3 more picks to grab a S or 2 and another CB.

If Dennard is that good and Peanut moves to safety then thats a route to take and DT can be had with the second.

What kind of TE Ric? A blocker or a catcher ? Cant a blocker be picked up in FA or after the draft ?
