We have too many needs to be double drafting at both positions. We just cannot afford Emery to whiff on key picks (Shea/Hardin)

And like it or not our new, current identity is offense...hopefully with a decent enough offense to keep them from putting up 30+

Grizz I hope it never comes to we are defined as being either defense or offense.

Lets keep them guessing ... and win games in the process.

Now 8-8 isnt such a bad start for a FRANCHISE that just tossed its HC overboard the year before.

Theres no need to even get in about Defense ... it has to be resolved for the likes of G.B.,Detroit and Minny.

Thosse are just kind of junk teams. If we are going to be Players ... it has to be Seattle and Frisco thats our target to get to the dance.

Dont set our sites low to the NFC North. We are beyond that . Lets humbug Seattle and see where we stand.

This TEAM isnt afraid of those son of a bitches ... We'll take them on. Thats what we're made of.

Lets keep an eye on this guy : Anthony Barr UCLA LB, sucked at the combine but bounced back since.

    An LDE ?

The Detroit Lions didn’t do any open-of-business deals at the start of free agency Tuesday, but that doesn’t mean that they weren’t working.
Lions general manager Martin Mayhew spent part of Tuesday at UCLA’s pro day, where one of the draft’s top outside linebacker prospects, Anthony Barr, wowed scouts with his workout.
UCLA coach Jim Mora tweeted that Barr ran a 4.44-second 40-yard dash Tuesday, significantly better than the 4.66 he ran at the NFL combine last month.
A converted fullback who played just two seasons of defense in college, the 6-foot-5, 255-pound Barr had 23.5 sacks and 41.5 tackles for loss the last two seasons. He likely would play strongside linebacker in the Lions’ new defense and have pass-rushing responsibilities in sub packages or at defensive end.
The Lions, who pick 10th in May’s draft, are thin at linebacker and could lose one of their top pass rushers in free agency. Willie Young is visiting the Jacksonville Jaguars today.

Hey wait a minute ... Willie Young ? And Anthony Barr on CHICAGO BEARS ?

Barr is more of a 3-4 guy. We don't need to try to convert another guy's position when we will have a schematic match in other players. If Barr falls to us it may be a great chance to get a team to overpay to trade up with us so we can net some great picks and still have a good shot at the guys we may very well take at 14 anyways.

Its good to be in the position of 14 to affect the NFL.

Emery could be in a position to be a lord in the draft if he plays his numbers right.

14 isnt top ten ...but it is on the outside top 15.

HALAS HALL is sitting in the catbird seat on draft day.

In the middle of the draft Emery could be being seated in the most coveted spot.

Now what do we do with this ?

    Its still DT and Safety.

    For old times sake ...

One of the greatest return men in NFL history will join the Atlanta Falcons.[IMG]
Devin Hester agreed to a three-year contract with the Falcons on Thursday, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported. The team later confirmed the news.
The Falcons desperately needed an upgrade in the return game. Atlanta ended 2013 10th in kickoff-return average (24.4) and 20th in punts (8.2) last season. They were also one of four teams in 2013 without a punt return over 25 yards or a kick return of over 50 yards, per ESPN's Field Yates.
Solely a returner with the Chicago Bears, Hester, 31, represents a major upgrade over Jacquizz Rodgers on kick returns and Robert McClain on punt returns.
Playing inside the Georgia Dome -- as opposed to the sloppy Soldier Field -- should aid Hester as he ages.
The return specialist is the NFL's all-time leader in punt return touchdowns (13) and total kick return touchdowns (18). Hester also returned a missed field-goal attempt 108 yards for a touchdown. Hester's 19 regular-season return TDs ties Hall of Famer Deion Sanders for the most in league history.
He will try to own the mark by himself with the Falcons.

When the Bears' 2014 regular-season schedule is released by the NFL sometime next month, it will be filled with former players and coaches.
The Bears will play games against all five of their players who have signed with other teams in free agency. They'll face defensive ends Julius Peppers (Packers) and Corey Wootton (Vikings) at home and on the road; defensive tackle Henry Melton (Cowboys) and quarterback Josh McCown (Buccaneers) at Soldier Field; and return specialist Devin Hester (Falcons) in Atlanta.
McCown won't be the only familiar face on the Tampa Bay sideline. The Buccaneers are led by former Bears coach Lovie Smith, who has added seven of his former Bears assistants to his new staff: Kevin O'Dea (special teams coordinator), Gill Byrd (cornerbacks), Andrew Hayes-Stoker (receivers), Hardy Nickerson (linebackers), Mike Phair (assistant defensive line), Mikal Smith (safeties) and Tim Spencer (running backs).

Former Bears defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli, who serves in the same capacity with the Cowboys, will be coaching Melton in Dallas and accompanying him to Soldier Field.

In addition to Hester, the Falcons feature former Bears offensive coordinator Mike Tice, who is Atlanta's offensive line coach, and guard Gabe Carimi, the Bears' 2011 first-round draft pick.

The Bears will also play games against three former players who are head coaches in Jim Harbaugh (49ers), Ron Rivera (Panthers) and Sean Payton (Saints), and one who is a defensive coordinator in Leslie Frazier (Buccaneers).

With FA all but done id say we all can get better insight into our draft. We have beat the dead horse over Donald,Dix,Pryor,Mosely at 14 and all COULD be the pick. What Emery has proven is he's unpredictable and obviously his boards do not resemble the "expert mocks." So who do you all think could be the dark horse picks at 14.

Tuitt, Jerrigan, Denard would be my dark horse picks, what do you all think?

From what I've been reading, Mosely's draft stock has been on the decline. Apparently he has some sort of injury concern.

I could see them doing something unexpected if a solid OL guy dropped to them at 14, like Taylor Lewan or Jake Matthews. I'm not saying we need to do this. I'm just saying Emery could find a guy drop to them that is simply BPA by a wide margin and feel he needs to pull the trigger in a scenario like this.

I understand the signing of Defense but if I could just get a handle on what HALAS HALL is thinking towards the draft ...

at least in the Lovie/Angelo era you could outguess them.

Based on his position and his draft ranking right now he's a top ten pick and if gets to them he's a guy the Lions would probably look at pretty seriously. He's really more of a 3-4 guy but the could use him as a hybrid SLB/DE the same way he Bears intend to do with McClellin.

After signing Houston, Young and Idonije, plus Lane, and Scott before that and having Bass and Washington from last year I think another DE isn't that high on the need list anymore. He's very similar to both Bass and Young and you have to think both will make the team so all you have left is him replacing McClellin and I don't think we're ready for that yet.

I'd be willing to bet there are no real dark horse picks for Emery this year. The entire world knows he needs a DT and a S and he's been working on filling in with some competition at S and may be looking at another prospect as well. There aren't two other players who meet his needs for a DT any better than Donald and Jernigan and at S any better then Ha Ha or Pryor. I'd bet my right nut it will come down to one of those four with Donald and Jernigan in the lead right now.

With those four guys at the top of his board I'll bet my left nut (they only shoot blanks now anyway) that at least one of those guys will still be on the board if not three or all four of them. Based on whose picking in front of us and their needs, and the guys at OT, WR and QB who usually occupy at least 5 or 6 of the top ten, Emery is in a perfect position to get the player he wants at one of those positions and I believe that's what he'll do. He really doesn't need to hide his intentions this year. They're obvious.

Although teams no the position they do not know the player. If a team new for sure who we were taking they may be more inclined to move in front of us if they could find a trading partner. So having 2 positions and 4 players, as you identified, will potentiallly keep a team from knowing the have to get in front of us to get a given player. Generally speaking we should have a couple of good options when the 14th pick comes along and if any of those 4 our gone then somebody else has fallen.

That's true but would it be a player we can actually use? FWIW here an early mock done by Greg Gabriel, our former director of college scouting, and Eric Galko. It's two weeks old and things have changed since then but it gives using something to work from. Interestingly enough they have both FS going before #14 and then we begin a run on DTs starting with Donald. We might use this as a way of projecting what may happen because these two guys have probably nailed some of these picks pretty well.

A couple of things that jump out at me are Manziel dropping out of the top ten and Blake Bortles sliding in there and the possibility that Taylor Lewan slides back as well. We don't need either of them and the only other guy in there I'd take at #14 might me Mack and he's NOT gonna slide. Of the teams picking in front of us the only two I could see needing a DT are Detroit and St.Louis and Detroit already has Suh as a 3 tech so they'd be more likely to take Jernigan to replace Fairley who they aren't real happy with.

Looking at who picks after us I'd say Pitt won't jump us for Donald because Nix is more their guy and now that Dallas has Melton I'd say Jernigan is more their guy. So in this run of DTs they seem to have placed each guy with the team whose needs align with the guys best skills. Farther on down the line are Arizona and Philly who play 4-3 fronts but the cost for those guys to jump us is pretty steep so it's doubtful they would. Donald is a great prospect but not one without some question marks too.

I think what's interesting about this mock is how they have 3 DBs, including 2 FS, going this early. I think one of those two FS will drop to us was well so I expect that three of our four top prospects will still be on the board at #14. With Tucker running the show I'd make Nix my dark horse guy but that's dark as midnight. I think he may drop into the 20s as well.

Hey Soul check out who is taking a TE in that mock at #12. Signing Bennett must have really hurt them.

I would love to see Buffalo take Barr at #9 to keep him out of Detroits hands.

Maybe we dont get Dix or Pryer in this mock but all 3 DT's come our way.

Hope sombody grabs Mosely at LB before G.B.
