Gotta go with the sentiment that it's just a number. But, if we're gonna bring back retired numbers, then we need to go all out... bring 'em all back.

    Even if it's painful.

And then get out of the practice of retiring jersey numbers.

And then... (heh-heh) standardize the damned thing.

That's what the Dallas Cowboys do. Seriously. They have that ring of honor (or whatever it's called) thing instead. I have never won this argument in any of the previous threads, so I won't here either. I still like retiring a great HoF player's jersey though.

Great Idea JABF. I like it. Only thing is even I can see we are going to need bigger jerseys with more scribble room on them. We need to get Webb and his t-shirt empire mobilized.

I'm going to go ahead and take a wild guess and say that you're wrong.

I don't think the 50 years thing is a bad idea at all. Would allow for another honorary ceremony for the player, when the number was re entered into the available numbers. At some point, something will have to be done. Either numbers will have to be stopped being retired, numbers brought back, or expansion into the one hundreds. For now, they could lift the number restrictions and appease it for a while. But in 100 years all teams will be about out of numbers even if they retire HOF only.

Here's the problem, the Bears have 14 retired numbers. So thats 14 numbers out of 101 or 110 numbers (101 counting 0 and 00, 110 if the Bears start using 01-09). Ok, doesnt sound too bad, but then you have to remember that the NFL has specific guidelines for which players can use which numbers. On top of that, you have 53 player roster, with decent turnovers year after year, so numbers can be used up pretty quickly.

So yeah...its just a number. You think Walter Payton was the first player to ever wear the number 34? It shouldnt matter who wore it before a certain player, nor should it matter if a new player down the road wears it either.
