    Introducing 'The Show'.

    by Alastair Davidson Senior Writer

Last season Alshon Jeffery established himself as one of the premier wide receivers currently doing the business in the NFL.

Helping himself to 1,421 receiving yards and seven touchdowns in just his second season in the league Jeffery marked himself out as a star in the making alongside fellow wideout Brandon Marshall.

And what do all big stars have? A nick name of course.

Just look at Beast Mode, Megatron, Big Ben or even the Legion of Boom.

So in lue of the trend, Jeffery has come up with a nickname for himself as he prepares for his third season as an NFL player:

"The Show," the Bears man offered up when asked about a possible nickname by Sporting News.
"I feel like every time I try to catch the ball and make a play, I try to put on a show. So that's what I would call myself," Jeffery continued.

With two years still left on his rookie contract we may be getting ahead of ourselves to bestow a nickname on Jeffery but his talent is there for all to see.

He and Marshall combined for a frightening 189 catches, 2,716 yards and 19 touchdowns last season and Jeffery is looking to repeat the form which saw him rank number six across the league in terms of wide receiver output.

What with his newly bestowed nickname, and the way he speaks of the future, 'The Show' is certainly not one to lack confidence:

“I’m not the type of person that brags a lot about anything,” said Jeffery.

“But I feel that last year, what we (he and Marshall) did, we were at the top of the list as the two best receivers. But that was last year. This year we have to set our goal and try our best to do the same thing we did last year, if not better.”

The Show and the Chicago Bears will begin their 2014 season against the Philadelphia Eagles August 8.

Not sure I like "The Show" too common... but it's his nickname so I can live with it

Any time you do stuff like this you need to make damn sure you back it up because it's like putting a "kick me" sign on your back. Fortunately he does have the goods to back it up.

    No.

You do NOT get to make your own nickname. Its not how that works.

I love Alshon from the time we picked him and I surely believe he will have a good season but I hope his head isn't getting to big. First we are the best wide receivers and now calling himself the show? His a$$ better back up the checks his mouth is writing.

I agree with those above; you don't usually come up with your own nickname. That said, before we start accusing this normally stoic and reserved kid of getting a little too full of himself, lets remember a couple of things:

    1. He was asked the question by Sporting News in the interview about a nickname for himself. For all we know, this is not something has has spent a lot of time thinking about; it's a pretty vanilla name, so I suspect it's just something he came up with off the cuff to answer the question.

    2. Even if he is growing a bit in his own mind, given where he started out (very quiet, shy and reserved), a little more confidence at this level isn't necessarily a bad thing.

I think all is just fine, and if he wants to be called "The Show", then that's fine by me...let The Show begin!!!:go bears:

Headlines saying "We are the best duo" and "I'm the show" but when you read the article its more like "We were good last year but we gotta work hard to be that good again" and on the spot coming up with "I try to put on a show so I guess I'd be the show". I suppose he could be getting cocky but I feel like it's reporters reaching for shit that isn't there.

The scary thing is that Alshon had that kind of statistical output last season and his game has a good bit of room to grow still and he has the capability to grow that much more. He hasn't reached his ceiling. Amongst other things, he's still not to the point where you can say, "Ok... third and 8, let's find Alshon and he'll get us the first down.", the way we can with BMarsh. There aren't a lot of receivers in the league who can be that guy, but Alshon could be. It seems he knows it too and I haven't seen anything that says he's not working hard towards being one the best. It wouldn't surprise me if Alshon is a better receiver this season and he doesn't quite put up 1,421 yards. Hopefully some of hunny bun Bears fans can see through that though.

There is danger in the attention these young guys get.

First sign of it is when you start giving yourself nicknames. Second... if he starts slipping into talking in the third person.

Really though what's he supposed to say?

Reporter: If you were to give yourself a nickname what would it be?

Alshon: I don't believe in nicknames.
