Conte out 4-5 months after surgery

Bears safety Chris Conte underwent shoulder surgery in late March and faces a recovery period of 4-5 months, meaning that he will be sidelined until training camp.

Selected by the Bears in the third round of the 2011 out of California, Conte has appeared in 45 games with 40 starts in three seasons. The 6-2, 203-pounder has recorded 228 tackles, six interceptions, 13 pass breakups, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.

Safety Chris Conte started all 16 games last season for the first time since joining the Bears in 2011.
The Bears have signed four safeties since the start of free agency March 11, re-upping with Craig Steltz[IMG] and inking three from other NFL teams: Ryan Mundy[IMG] (Giants), M.D. Jennings[IMG] (Packers) and Danny McCray[IMG] (Cowboys).

"I know I'm going to have to compete for my position on this team," Conte said. "I am prepared to do that and felt having this surgery was the best way to be 100 percent healthy and be the best player I can possibly be."

Conte started all 16 games for the first time in his career last season, registering 95 tackles, three interceptions, seven pass breakups and one forced fumble.

"Whenever you don't have a good season you do some soul searching," Conte said. "You find the reasons why you love the game. Competition is a big part of why I love playing football. I knew they would be bringing in players to compete. It doesn't bother me one bit. It will only make me better.

If it didn't already this should make drafting a FS somewhere along the line a certainty.

Late March? Wonder what the reasoning was for waiting that long or was he recently injured?

Course I do. I may think he is a bad player and wish he was off the team, but I never like seeing a Bear (or any NFL player not named Favre) get injured.

It is their career. Not saying he is a bad guy, just a bad player.

4-5 Months is Early August or Early September. He won't be ready for the regular season.

This makes drafting a Safety in the 1st or 2nd Round (preferably the 1st Round) mandatory.

We absolutely can't go into the season with either MD Jennings, McCray, Martin, or Steltz as one of our starting Safeties opposite Mundy.

BiM's, Mundy shouldn't be a starter either, at least not w/out earning it.

Sadly this is horrible news, b/c of the 4 other S's on the team right now, Conte was at least better then 3 of them, not that it's saying much.

Don't know but a shoulder injury for a Safety isn't a good thing and 4-5 months just for recovery means the end of July to the end of August so he'll miss all of the OTAs and maybe all of the preseason as well if that estimate is right. So how does he get ready to play or is the strategy here to end up on the IR or release him with an injury settlement and he moves on? Think he see the handwriting on the wall?

As horribly bad as Conte was, he is still better than the other guys I named. I was hoping the Bears would take a Safety at #14 WITH Conte healthy so we wouldn't have to start him either. Now that he's injured I think it's an absolute MUST to hopefully get either Clinton-Dix or Pryor early.

He knows his abilities. He understands that it only really takes one shoulder to play like he did last year. He'll be able to pick up right where he left off. We're good

Probably feels that he stands a better shot of getting a shot at another team if Mundy and MD Jennings don't beat him out of the starting/backup jobs. :)

Fair enough. I just wondered if you were being facetious or not. I wonder if this thread will go on as long as the "flogging thread" did.

Now I feel bad that I started that. :(

This is one of those rare situations that after a hard fought battle to determine the very best the team has to offer..... you still lose....

Could they have kept this news under wraps until AFTER the draft? No sense letting the league know we are in more dire straits than necessary.
