per ESPN and multiple sources. Shout out to SmokingJay who first broke it on Facebook. I just thought it deserved its own thread, since it has now been made official, per multiple sources. Biggsy is also running with it.

LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler has been cleared to play and is expected to start Sunday against the Detroit Lions, coach Marc Trestman said Thursday.

Cutler returned to the practice field Thursday, about 2½ weeks after tearing a groin muscle during an Oct. 20 game against the Washington Redskins. The original diagnosis was for him to miss four weeks.

"Jay has spent, since the day he got hurt, really 24/7 doing everything he can on and off the field to get ready," Trestman said.

No. 2 quarterback Josh McCown has had great success in relief of Cutler, but Trestman said Cutler "took every rep" in practice and expects him to be able to start.

"Jay is unique regarding he really understands his body," Trestman said. "He understands how to take care of himself, and he's a unique athlete. There was an incredible amount of hard work and effort that he had put in to even have a chance. We're excited about it. It says a lot about his commitment to the team. He came in this morning, did a few of the things. The doctors said, 'You're good to go.' "

ESPN.com Bears reporter Michael C. Wright contributed to this report.

He's a tough guy. That's why I got upset when folks questioned his toughness. He may be a knucklehead throwing ints at times, but I've always felt he's given the team max effort, even when he was getting the snot beaten out of him behind the crappy Bears OL's over the years.

As long as he is healthy, great. But if he goes out and re-strains it, the doctors who cleared him better be fired.

Actually, I likely broke it on the board here before he did on FB.

Of course, the Score broke it before I did here....

    So there is that

Good to hear, hope he's not forcing this though, Suh and the rest of that DL is going to go after that leg, if it's not strong enough he's going to reinjure real quick

I'm glad he's back but concerned he isnt 100% yet. 3 weeks seems awfully fast for what we were told was a bad injury. Anyone else gonna have sphincter-spasm every time it looks like the pocket is starting to collpase on Sunday?

MPbears, my biggest concern is that he is going to lay a MASSIVE EGG on Sunday. 2+ INTs, a fumble, whatever. I am not convinced he really is at full strength, regardless of what the team doctors and Jay say. God Help Us All if his mechanics are off because that groin is still gimpy. I will sing his praises for "being tough" IF AND WHEN he actually performs at least as well as McCown has performed. There is "smart/selfless tough" and "stupid/selfish tough." I just pray that Cutler's performance on Sunday falls into the former category, as opposed to the latter. He doesn't get a medal from me if he goes out there and craps the bed against Detroit in a must-win game.
