Bears: Special teams still looking for a 'Sunday' returner

Special-teams coordinator Joe DeCamillis appeared a little more animated and urgent at practice this week after his special teams were anything but against Philadelphia (blocked FG try, Eagles TD kickoff return, three penalties, bobbled punt). He declared that his units needed to find people “who can play on Sunday,” meaning real-life NFL games.

Whether he found enough of them on Thursday against the Jacksonville Jaguars was doubtful, particularly in the quest for a returner to fill the gaping void left by Devin Hester’s departure for Atlanta.

“We certainly didn’t see much in the return game,” said coach Marc Trestman.

Eric Weems, with a chance to secure the returner role while Chris Williams recovers from a hamstring injury, fumbled away a first-quarter kickoff return. The turnover set up Jacksonville at its 23-yard line and the Jaguars scored seven plays later on a six-yard pass from Chad Henne to Marqise Lee.

Michael Spurlock was inserted to return the second-half kickoff. He reached the Chicago 11. Michael Ford returned Jacksonville’s next kickoff, also only to the 11, but only after dropping the ball in the end zone.

Spurlock proceeded to signal fair-catch on a fourth-quarter punt, let it leak through his arms but was spared the ignominy of a fumble when the ball went out of bounds.

“We had the turnover, but more than that we haven’t seen anything in the return game. It’s been pretty much a catch and a stop so we’ve got to look into that as well…. I’m not sure where we are.”

If there was a positive, rookie punter Patrick O’Donnell gained an edge over any remaining competition with Tress Way when he got off kicks of 57 and 51 yards in the first half, while Way’s one for the first half went out of bounds at the Jacksonville 25 after covering just 26 yards.

Way rebounded with a 50-yard effort, but O’Donnell directed a 38-yard effort that put the Jaguars at the Jacksonville 15 with no return. Way then helped himself with a 54-yard kick late in the fourth quarter.

Chris Williams is our primary KR and PR. End of discussion.

Michael Ford should be the backup returner. Please cut Weems, Spurlock and Edwards.

In the process of replacing players it seems Phil Emery has missed the boat on this one. There's no arguing that we should have kept Devin Hester. Not for $3.5 mil guaranteed.

We seem to have caught a bad break by Chris Williams getting a "hammy" strain but I have to ask the question that other than him what have we done to assure that we had the same kind of competition for the return specialist spots that we have for other positions? I mean we elected not to bring back an future HOF KOR/PR guy and this is what we're getting as his replacements. They look like they came right out of the movie "The Replacements".

I'm sorry but this is not nearly good enough. WTF do they even have Eric Weems still back there. The guy is totally useless as far as getting any kind of a decent return and tonight he puts the ball on the ground and costs us a TD. Enough is enough. If I can see this guy hasn't got it why can't Joe De?

He and Tucker are already on my shit list from last year and so far neither one of them is moving up much. This thread isn't about the D so I'll ignore Tucker for the moment and just say I'm tired of listening to Joe De's excuses and crap about finding players. He has at least 60-70 to pick from who aren't starters! Start coaching them like you're paid to do Joe.

They were lousy last year and they're even worse this year. We're going in the wrong direction. I thought Joe was supposed to be some hot shot STeams coach but he's shown me nothing so far. Letting Dave Toub leave for this guy is on par with trading off Devin Hester for Eric Weems. No excuses. They aren't getting it done. It's that simple.

That pretty much sums up the STs. Does he do a face-palm after saying this or did he drop the ball? (rimshot)

When I hear any coach say that after OTAs, a mini-camp, and three weeks of training camp that he doesn't know where he's at then my feeling is he better find out real soon. When you can see as obviously as any half way intelligent fan at home what isn't working then it's time to try something different.

If I see Weems returning kicks next week I'm gonna start calling for DeCamillis' scalp. This is the classic definition of insanity. Week after week it's the same shit. Our STeams haven't looked good since Dave Toub left and the caliber of the players Joe D has to choose from is better.

    This is getting ridiculous.

ST'ers looking for a Sunday Coach.

ST is a mess. And if DeCamillis thinks Weems is his guy then I'm not sure DeCamillis is OUR guy. Weems adds nothing. He does remove something though. A roster spot.
