Either way, he did bring a lot of excitement to the Bears. Sometimes I thought my heart was going to stop watching him. Here's his Super Bowl TD return.

Really sucks he didn't get the record as a Bears player, I really hope it gets it regardless. That Rams game will forever haunt me.

    Bye, bye Lovie guy! :(

You all can debate it all you want but if Phil Emery isn't doing all he can to rid himself of Lovie's guys then he's doing a damn good imitation of it. Even at age 31 the guy can still make ST Coordinators sweat and he had one PR for a TD last year, one called back and two KOR that nearly broke for TDs but didn't because teams kept a spy back to make sure he didn't. That's still how much respect he commands. At the very least they should have made him an offer before they shoved him out the door.

Another guy welcomed back with open arms by Uncle Phil. Now he sleeps with the fishes.

I don't think this is a 100% "getting rid of a Lovie guy" move whats soever.

Da Bears cannot afford to have a 30-sum year old KR/PR specialists on their team anymore especially with how many starting defense positions are need to be replaced, as well as, adequate depth added to the roster so there isn't such a talent gab vs first string and second.

If he was still a mediocre CB or WR it might be a different case. Plus I highly doubt Hester would be giving the Bears any kind of home team discount to stay in the navy & orange.

Sad to see him go for sure, but time to turn the page.

"Alligator Phil" strikes again. It's just business Sonny, it's not personal.

Brando as Phil; "Instead of making him and offer he can't refuse I'm not gonna make him an offer at all.....fuck him".

How would we know that if they never even approached him about returning? The guys still scores points and provides great field position. Can you say the same about Adam Podlesh. He can't play CB or WR either. He was one of the worst punters in the league last year vs one of the top PR/KOR men and he makes more than Hester but he still has a job. Funny huh?

I'm not so sure it's a "Lovie" thing but rather a simple business move. Too much $ involved and maybe they want to give him the chance to test the waters first to see if some team WILL give him a better payday. Love Hester but Lovie & JA screwed the pooch when he gave him the big $ to be the "#1" WR.

No matter "who's guy" Hester is, he is a player that warrants only about half of what he makes if he is only playing special teams. It's a business.

I agree but did they even make him a vet minimum offer at $940k that would only have counted $570k against the cap? Surely they could have put that much on the table and see what he says. Somebody will pay him as mil to a mil and half to play for them.

Hester has slowed down and is a returner only, he no longer can outrun the coverage, which is what made him special. I see it differently==== If LOVIE would not have tried to make a #1 receiver out of him and let him concentrate on returning Kicks he would have had the record. I hope he gets a chance to get it somewhere, maybe at the end of free agency we can bring him back for that $570K cap hit, we just have other needs right now. Still a good chunk of change for a now average return man that plays no other positions, for a shot at the record maybe they will work something out if nobody else picks him up.

Can someone tell me why he never panned out as a CB? I mean was he not drafted as 1?

But he never earned most of that money because a lot of it was contingent on him becoming the #1 WR which he was for about a year and no more. A lot of that money was backend stuff he never saw. Sure it's business but even in business if you like a guy you at least sound him out with an offer and it appears they didn't even do that. That just says "we don't want you" and yet here's another still productive vet Phil walks to the door and shoves out.

So tell me it's "just business" when it's the same with all of these guys and they were all among Lovie's biggest supporters. Come on brother we all didn't just drop out of a tree yesterday. I can recognize a pattern without needing to see the whole tie and so can anyone else who wants to see it.

He was listed as a CB at Miami but never played there much and never had the aptitude for it as a pro. I'm not trying to insult the guy but his game is all speed and reactions. He's not a great thinker. He couldn't diagnose coverages and as a receiver he was horrible at reading and understanding them enough to adjust his routes. Plus they never really used his strengths as a WR. The misplayed him his entire career.

Two PR for TDs last year (one called back on a stupid penalty and that WAS the record) with a 14.2 yd PR average and a 27.6 yd average on 52 KOR with a couple of 80 yarders. He was out running some of the people some of the time. He's not "Ridiculous Hester" anymore but the guy is still one of the top PR/KOR in the NFL and I didn't seen him getting any worse last year. If anything he improved a bit by just returning kicks.

He wants that record and even if all he gets elsewhere is the same $940k offer you gotta think he'd take it and shoot for TD #20. Lovie will probably take him if no one else does. So I'm 90% certain he won't be back because we didn't want him back. When I get turned down for a date I don't ask twice, do you? LOL

All he would have cost us on a vet minimum cap wise was $570k. Look at the roster for #82, Chris Williams. There's his replacement. The Canadian version of Devin Hester and he's gonna cost us $420k anyway so we saved $150k letting him go. Big whoop, we pay much more for workout bonuses. This kid Williams has never played one NFL game or returned kicks on an NFL field that's much narrower than a CFL field and yet we showed a HOF KOR/PR guy the door and another long term vet doesn't get to retire as a Bear.

I don't mean to be a smart ass but tell me again that this is all business and has nothing to do with him being one of Lovie's biggest supporters. I don't buy it one bit.

Think what he could have done if they would have let him concentrate on it... Rather than trying to make him a #1 WR.

There are 3 players I'd like to see return: Peanut, McCown, and Hester. With a +5% to cap space I think we can keep maybe two but I think Hester is at the bottom of Emery's list. Hell, even if they get rid of Earl Bennett and save $ I doubt if they keep him even then.
