Legendary coach and Hall of Famer stresses what's important other than money players earn

The personalities of Mike Ditka and Marc Trestman appear to be as different as can be.

Yet the current Bears coach and his legendary predecessor share common ground in their love for football and for one of the NFL's charter teams.

On Tuesday, Ditka took up Trestman's invitation to return to Halas Hall and watch the Bears practice for the first time since "Da Coach" was fired in 1992. Ditka also was invited to talk to the current Bears at the end of practice during a brief speech outside Halas Hall.

"Coach Ditka … when I got the job … I felt that was a great place to start … somebody who knows as much about the Bears and the traditions of the Bears as he does," Trestman said. "And it turned out to be dinner with our wives.

"I called him last week with the idea that I left him with to see the new facility and spend some time with our players, and say hello to them. And he graciously agreed."

Ditka makes rare appearance at Bears practice

    By Brad Biggs

Da Coach was the most notable observer at Chicago Bears practice on Tuesday at Halas Hall, but Mike Ditka’s rare appearance at the invitation of coach Marc Trestman wasn’t the only news.
Wide receiver Earl Bennett and defensive tackle Henry Melton, both sidelined with concussions, were on the field to watch the session, a clear sign they are making progress. It is evident at this point that Bennett and Melton will not play in Friday’s preseason game at Oakland.

But the players were onlookers as the Bears switched from full pads to shells and shorts for just the second time since they were permitted to go in full gear.

Bennett has been suffered a concussion Aug. 2 in a practice at Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais and left the field at the beginning of the practice the next night at Soldier Field with a team physician. Melton was injured on a block by Panthers running back DeAngelo Williams during the Aug. 9 game at Carolina.

I'm liking this a whole lot ,..... and it was Trestman who did the inviting ,.... Class Act Coach Ernie ! ! !

Like the Hawks did ,... the Bears need to do the same,...get the older players / coaches out and about MORE OFTEN

It's no secret that Michael is /was to blame for the McCaskey's short comings with the Bears and their fans

I'd love to see more of this ,.. the younger players need a shot in the arm from former players and stars

    GREAT MOTIVATION

Good to see Bennett finally get back, at least to see the field. As long as he and Melton are ready for wk1 I'm good.

As for Ditka, he's a bit of a characture of what he once was, but the dude's been there and has made a ton of mistakes I have no doubt he's learned from, I hope the team takes what he's saying to heart.

Great idea to have Da Coach back in Halas Hall. I wonder why this was his first visit back in how many years?

The whole regime, Mc's on down have done an about face on the 85 bears, I heard Singletary was there taking notes also. It used to be that the 85 Bears were persona non grata, seems HH has decided otherwise and good for them.

    I liked this idea.
I'm sure the young guys hear enough about the history and legacy of the team (most of it probably goes in one ear and out the other).
But I think the message might hit home a little harder when it comes straight from a walking, talking piece of history.
Nice to see da Coach back.
