Emery said to want to re-tool the D, not rebuild. Is this the smart way to do it?

Retool = keep the same system and structure and just add in a few new tools
Rebuild = new system, a lot of new players and coaches

There might not be a heap of change from 2013 to 2014 with maybe 4 new starters at best, but considering how much has changed back to 2012 it's a rebuild defense.

If there's no Urlacher, Tillman, Peppers, Melton and others not to mention no Love Smith or Marinelli from 2012 then it's a rebuild. Last year with the young and veteran FA linebackers added but not a lot of other new parts and trying to keep the same system it was a retool.

It still means the same thing.

Problem w/this theory is that Emery stated that he wants to use more scheme to confuse the O, and the old Lovie 2 has zero interest in subterfuge. So Emery has already said he wants a scheme change on top of all the player turn over.

That's another good point Ric. This is going to be more than just a change in players. It's certainly not going to be the old Lovie Smith D. It might not even be a 4-3. So, they will have changed coaches, players and scheme since '12. They will have basically nuked the D.

Don't expect Briggs back next when contract is up also, in another 1-2 years the D will have been completely turned over.

Unfortunately, our defense also doesn't have a head.

I for one am fine with a total nuking of our defense. No offense but Briggs isn't getting younger. I don't think we need to resign him after his contract is up. Bostic or Greene should be ready by then.

There is only about 30 before free agency begins, and I don't see how we can enter the free agency bidding until we know for sure what is going to happen with Peppers. He is the key guy from a money standpoint.

We have some older players that command hefty salaries, and some will have to go. Is that re-tooling or re-building? Semantics, either way some change is in order.
