Is Conte just a below average safety?

What is everyone's opinion of Conte? I thought that many viewed him as "promising" as recently as a year ago, but it seems to me that he has turned in a subpar season thus far. Are the safeties a big part of the reason we are giving up so many big plays? I read this quote from an opposing scout, and was wondering if you guys would agree with any of it:

Chris Conte spends most of his time hanging back and waiting for balls to come his way. He is a poor tackler and a worse cover man. Once teams figured that out, he was exposed and, quickly, terrible. Bears must find a replacement for Conte or else forget about 2013 season. Conte is either too slow or can't react quickly enough to make plays on the ball. Look at other safeties around the league- they defend the pass better than Conte, and are usually more physical as well. The Bears have to find better safeties..

Interesting. Not my take on Conte at all. I think he's a pretty decent tackler and that he plays well in coverage. I think he can be prone to pump fakes, but that is a mental issue. Seems like the scout thinks his issue is physical.

Bearstuff, I agree that Conte bites way too much on pump fakes. How many times have we seen Conte struggling to get into the frame just as an opposing WR is reeling in a 20+ yard catch downfield? Seems like Conte is always a step or two behind when it comes to providing his corners with a safety valve over the top.

I think Conte is a good FS actually. Funny how with no pass rush and learning a new scheme he get's thrown under the bus. If he isn't at the LOS much of the time he wouldn't get "de-framed".

Scheme isn't the problem but the lack of pass rush sure is.

Kid's doing OK. The idea that he's going to keep us from the Promised Land is ludicrous. Besides, there's no 'plug & play' stud FSs out there.

Much more pressing issues than this...

Problem with most out there who have legitimate talent is always the same...they think they're worth tons more than they're really worth.

Save the money especially when these aren't saviors but stop gap measures at best.

I don't get where this guy is coming from. He's actually a pretty sure tackler. I think our problems lie more in the front 7. Yea, he bites on pump fakes, but so does every Safety in the freakin league, and his worst game for this was the Steelers and Big Ben's pump fakes kill everyone. Is he a pro bowler that is so good he can overcome top tier QB's with good pump fakes? No, but damn few are, and if you can find one then grab him. Until then, Conte looks to be pretty good in my book.

I agree regarding the front 7. It's really killing us.

this is going to be an ugly game, IMO. Drew Brees is one of the best. Going up agsinst him with no pass rush is going to be ugly. I want to be so wrong about that, but I just can't see it any other way.

BearsinHouston, you are just being objective and reasonable in your assessment. I would be STUNNED if we actually win this game. I expect Brees to pretty much move the ball on will at us, much like what Manning just did to the Eagles last week.

I think he's outstanding in coverage and poor near the LOS. I'll take him as a pure FS any day in the day of high-flying offense, but you have to be able to step up and battle in the trenches.

I wouldn't mind seeing him personally but how good of shape is he in is my question plus do we have the cap room for him?

Shit like this makes us all dumber for having read it. For fuck's sake, at least know how to spell "tutu" in your lame, homophobic efforts at comedy.

How many FSs' do you see solo tackle AP successfully?

I think that bringing Conte up to the line of scrimmage is playing to his weakness rather than his strengths.

    BMG,

Just curious where this comment came from? Do you have a link to the article, I would like to read it. I think Conte and Wright are both actually pretty good safeties. I would say we have a good pair there for the first time in a LONG time. The problem to me as well is from the lack of pressure up front.

I personally thought our Safety's were average before the draft, I don't think they suck, but I don't look at them as good either, they're just out there part of the team and nothing special.

    ^^This^^

Most fans took it as a given that we would have growing pains while anything special here & there was just a bonus till they mature.

Talking about any short comings like falling for pump fakes, etc. were just things that were going to be agonizing/infuriating during the process.

Tell us something we didn't know...
