I do wonder if this is the reason he's smoking so much this season. Another McCown win and he'll be a 3 pack a day guy.

wait what? BOTTOM of that group you say? Below SB winning Flacco and Romo and Meltdown Matty? huh who would have guessed it....whoda thunk it. hmmmmm I'm trying to remember who said such outlandish things and tried to backup it up w/facts and not national storylines and bs talking points...guess that guy was right afterall...give that man his props folks.

that being said, McCown isn't costing Cutler a dime b/c he's not a fraction of the qb that Cutler is. He's not going to be a starter anywhere next year, let alone in Chicago.

I don't think he's costing Jay money. Emery will have a contract dollar amount in mind as his max, and he won't go over that number. McCown has nothing to do with driving the Cutler dollar figure up or down, IMHO.

If it cost's him anything its negotiation leverage; as in, not only did you get injured yet again, your cheap ass, has-been backup plays just as good as you, Jay tell me again why you think your worth XX million?...that may translate in lost potential income...impossible to say for sure...

nah, unless they are thinking of having McCown INSTEAD of Cutler. Otherwise, the two are different transactions. One is the starter and the other is the BU.

For every dollar in leverage McCown takes there's 2 dollars put back in by Matt Schaub, Sam Bradford and Jake Lockers injuries, Geno Smith and Mike Glennon and whoever is starting in Minn or Jacksonville.

The best leverage in taking dollars away from Jay has to be Bridgewater, Manziel, Mariota etc etc playing lights out college ball and showing Emery that he can get a future top line QB with a late first round or even a trade up second round pick. If he isn't confident in the college group then he can't afford to not sign Jay.

3 years of a Blaine Gabbert the presumptive starter at QB even if mentored by McCown with a rebuilding defense will almost certainly cost Emery his job.

You know what's costing Jay dollars (and the negotiating leverage for those dollars)?
It isn't McCown. He's merely solidified himself for next year as the NFLs best #2 man this year.

It's Jay Cutler. Another season, although improved, still marked by injury and too many turnovers.

You bring up an excellent point BDU, in that Emery understands that you do have to get the QB issue "right" or ultimately you can lose your job. You can do better than Jay, but at the same time you could certainly do worse too. We've seen countless "sure thing" QB kids come from the college ranks (even Heisman Trophy winning QB's) that end up complete busts in the NFL. The last 30 years or so is littered with college QB studs (the darlings of the sports media folks & fans) who busted in the NFL. Some were epic busts, (top 5 picks, or even #1 in the entire draft picks).

okay.... what is the FT worth? 18M for one year? Whatever it is, that is a starting point as to what Bears will be paying him next year.

What would it be worth if he is tagged two years in a row? That is the starting point (or bare minimum) for guaranteed money in whatever deal he signs.
