Michael C. Wright @mikecwright 29m
Now if they just give M.D. #20. MD 20/20
Report I read on Dix was that he could play both S positions. Pryor won't see the 2nd round.
This is a crap signing for depth only (at best). I wouldn't write much into it as far as what Emery will target in the 1st round. The DL is still a trash heap and is missing a starter at 3T and RDE. Way bigger and more imprint ant need IMO.
The DL has 4 of 5 starters, possibly 5 of 5 depending on how much they like Bass, and 3 depth guys. S has 0 starters and 3 depth guys. CB has 1 starter and 1 depth guy.
Right now I'd say that DB is still the larger need, it's not like we cannot find starters/rotational DL in the 2nd-4th rounds. Guys like Kareem Martin, Anthony Johnson, Taylor Hart, Ed Stinson, Kelcy Quarles are all guys that can help the DL instantly and get after the qb, which allows for the DB's to be taken care of early.
Still waiting for a good S or CB to be signed.
I'm gonna go out on a limb and say Steltz is gone
Trent DIlfer is not impressed.
You're not the only one, bro.
I wish I shared your optimism there.
All we have accomplished so far DL-wise is to upgrade one position (Shea --> Houston) while downgrading another (Peppers --> nothing). That's it. Nothing but a 1:1 exchange. Ratliff is a decent depth/spot starter guy but he's not a building block nearing the end of his career. Collins is young enough to maybe become a full time starter but he's coming off ACL surgery and won't even be cleared until summer at least. So unless you somehow just know that Collins will be 100% by September (if he ever is) and that Bass or CornWash will magically become a starting RDE soon, I'm not sure how you're figuring the DL has been much improved.
Count me in on that too.
Anyone like DeCoud?
Let's break this down:
as of right now(imo) Bass is Shea's replacement as rotational starter/backup DE
Houston is Peppers replacement
Ratliff/Collins are rotational/starters
Washington is the backup
So there is no NEED for a day 1 DT starter, there MIGHT be a need for a day 1 DE starter.
You can get a building block DT in this years draft, but it doesn't have to be at 14 b/c that guy is going to be in a rotation w/two capable players and just has to develop into a day 1 guy next year(see shea/bostic) but why are you going after someone like that at 14 and not a day one immidiate every down player at DE or S or CB? Same w/DE, chances are the DE is going to be in a rotation w/Houston/Bass/Washington.
There are 0 day 1 starters at Safety, unless you beleive in Conte, who ranked worse then Mundy, who wasn't a top 50 safety.
There is 1 day 1 starter at CB, Jennings, and backup in Frey.
Give me the high ceiling of a guy like Dix or Pryor over the Donald/Jernigan b/c a guy like Anthony Johnson is going to be available later and I don't buy for one minute that either of those two are VASTLY better then Johnson, and I do believe that Dix/Pryor are VASTLY better then any S that you can get in the 2nd-4th.
ACL inj's are no longer the ruiner of careers it used to be, and by all accounts the team was very happy w/how he rehabbed.
Bass was actually playing really well when he got his shots to play, PFF actually in the first few weeks he played had him ranked 25th of eligable DE's, Shea was ranked near the bottom, not bad for a guy that didn't start the season on your team.
I hope. And I hope they get a solid one. We've got the "quantity" thing down. I just want the Bears to figure out how to bring in "quality" safeties.
depth, nothing more
Optimist take: GB plays more man & a 3-4, so perhaps the scheme change will better fit this dude's skill set.
Oh, and Steltz is a FA.
Here is a snip it from one of the Packer websites:
The Green Bay Packers have been relatively quiet in the early stages of free agency, but some good news came today with one free agent signing: Safety M.D. Jennings to the Chicago Bears.
Packer fans, who were happy to see the team cut ties with Jennings, should be even happier seeing him go to their division rival. The Bears have signed Jennings to a one-year deal. He will join incumbent Bears starter Chris Conte at the safety position for Chicago. The two should make a great pair as both have experience blowing coverage in critical situations.
I hate to say it, but I agree.
Ok so it's not the pro bowl safety we would've loved by Jennings, Conte and Mundy can now at least compete for spots. Plus I'm sure we will either draft or sign another guy.
I think with some good coaching it's actually Conte who will lift his game. Yeah he was terrible last year but he's also played at an ok level at times. And the last couple of years he hasn't had any competition. He knows his buddy Wright will be gone and he'll be next if he doesn't improve. Plus actually having some DT's and LB's stopping the run will likely hel him.
heh.... you're happy with the packer cast-offs?
Good luck with that.
We better re-sign Melton.
Well said. Could not agree more.
There no way we go into the season with either Conte or Jennings starting at Safety.
Emery still has something up his sleeve either via another free agent not on the roster yet or the draft. Or both.
I also think he may be waiting to see if he can get a player who gets cut by another team
