Wish the Bears had selected him in the 7th instead of Leno. -_-

Maybe sports will talk more about the skills of players instead of who they sleep with.

Exactly what I was thinking. The fact the NFL made such a big deal out of it to me is more part of the problem than anything. Yeah, accept him for who he is, but that also includes treating him like anyone else. This shouldn't be a story, this shouldn't be a headline. This should be a DE/OLB type player being drafted by the Rams in the later rounds. Nothing more, nothing less.

After this year, I think that there will be a couple (maybe more than a couple) already established NFL players coming out. If they see Sam being accepted, they will join him.

Then BOOM it is not a big deal any more

Bears were prepared for post-draft run at Michael Sam

Missouri defensive end Michael Sam was drafted by the St. Louis Rams in the seventh round, the 249th player taken. Had he slipped by the Rams and gone undrafted, the Bears were looking to sign Sam, the first player openly gay player to enter the NFL draft, as an undrafted free agent and have him compete for a job at defensive end.

“We would have put him at defensive end and might have given him a shot at ‘Sam’ ‘backer, but I think his skill set is more defensive end,” said GM Phil Emery. “Obviously, when somebody has that number of sacks, you’ve got to pay attention to that. You give him a chance to come in and compete for a job. So, yes, had he made it through, we would have been competitive in terms of college free agency.”
The Bears did not concern themselves with whether Sam being gay would be any kind of distraction. They simply did not think that was necessary, Emery said.
The reason why the Bears did not draft the SEC co-defensive player of the year was a case of numbers: They already have a stock of defensive ends and not all of those are going to make this season’s roster as it is.

“Obviously, all of the work that we did on D-end, not only this offseason but having David Bass, having Cornelius [Washington] here, bringing in Austen Lane, the mix of players that we have brought in – right now, we’re one over on that roster spot,” Emery said. “So, had he made it through the draft, we were more than willing to be competitive in terms of free agency and hope to sign him and beat one of those guys out because of his production. But in terms of drafting for a spot that you’re already over with, veteran and young players, doesn’t make a lot of sense in terms of your resources.”

    Hello friend. Welcome to DBS.

As a Christian I know that story well. But what does that have to do with a man crying out of sheer joy?

Didn't America get upset when Ian Johnson proposed to his white girlfriend? Didn't America ALSO get enraged over a cereal commercial featuring a biracial family last year? If so.............I don't care what the "pulse of the room" is, on a national level, it's still not good, but doing things like what Michael Sam is doing is still moving things in the right direction, in terms of being cool with people with different lifestyles. Why that is, is that he's put himself out there, and any public figure (NFL or not) that takes a shot at him over it, is going to look like, and be treated like an asshole, and with good cause. Seriously, you don't like it, don't pay attention to it; problem solved.

Also this: the Packers actually had a semi-openly gay player under Vince Lombardi. Anyone who treated that player differently were gonna be told to take a hike, which is amazingly progressive, given that that was almost 50 years ago.

Didn't hear about those two things, when was the Ian Johnson proposal? Who the hell was upset about a cereal commercial? I mean were people legitimately up in arms or what? If so, that's pathetic.

Oh, there were a mass cries of outrage over an interracial couple being shown as a normal family.

The Johnson proposal, I think was in 2007. Now, the further in time we get, the less anonymity there is in making bold, declarative statements against any ethnic group, so things will get better in that regard, BUT, at the same time, you're always going to have mouth breathers like this. Honestly, I hate to say it, but it's gonna take a consistent amount of the non-famous using social media in such a disrespectful way, and to be exposed nationally for people to start thinking "Oh wow, society doesn't care to hear what I have to say about any particular ethnic group!"
