I'm always dazzled by how badly the Detroit Lions under-perform each year. The team has solid talent. If they ever do get a good coach they could be a solid team. As it is, they swept us this year, so hopefully they don't get any better with the new coaches.

Yeah, I'm really worried about Detroit hiring a new (2nd choice) HC who before that was an about-to-be-fired OC on a team that missed the playoffs and before that was a HC for a different team that went 2-14.

That's Concern #99 on the "Top 100 Concerns for Bears 2014" list.

Maybe, but the Lions are not. See: history.

Well, that's why Emery is here. These other teams are not standing pat. And we already had a talent gap to begin with. If the D had not fallen off a cliff, we would be sitting alright. It depends on what personnel we get next year (and how well we are able to develop them) as to how we compare -- in addition to how well the other teams upgrade efforts are realized.

I'm not worried about Caldwell at all. He inherited dungys team when he retired with no real changes. Skated that into a superbowl loss and then proceeded to make the team worse two years in a row by barely making the playoffs and then going 2-14. Then he ant to Baltimore as the qb coach. They won the superbowl, then he was promoted to oc and they can't even make the playoffs

His history is of stepping in and making teams worse.

true... But I think a lot of our fears are based on the fact that with their talent, they are just a good HC away from winning. Unless we can get them either Tice or Tucker (or preferably both)

I agree. I think Caldwell is overrated. We'll see if that's true next year.

Many Bears fans fail to understand this. Green Bay won't be the weak GB we saw this season. We may never see that weak of a team in Green Bay for years to come. Detroit has been a perennial under achiever team, but that doesn't mean they will continue to be like that. Times change. Teams change. And we've got a bigger mess on our hands on defense than many fans realize. It could be fixed in one season, or it may take two - or we could do the endless loop like Lovie did on offense and never get it right. In the meantime it's not like the other three teams in the division are sleeping like Ditka. They will be getting better too.

Emery and Trestman (hopefully) got it right by keeping Mel Tucker. If they got it wrong, then we lose another year. We've seen this before when Lovie couldn't get somebody here who could build a solid offense.

Awesome Detroit will be irrelevant for another 10 years. At least there hiring was pc.
