The Chicago Tribune confirms 2012 first-round pick Shea McClellin will convert to strong-side linebacker this offseason.
After failing as a pass-rush specialist, the Bears hope to salvage McClellin's career as a stand-up linebacker, where GM Phil Emery believes he can upgrade the team's run defense. Chicago's hope is McClellin will make like Seahawks DE-turned-SLB Bruce Irvin and allow the Bears to field as many athletes on defense as possible. McClellin mostly played with his hand up at Boise State. Jan 29 - 10:31 PM

So the Bears wasted a 19th pick for a SAM; well done Emery. Im not sure he'll even be good at this, he's not exactly strong. At last they can hope they'll get 2 decent years out of him before he's gone.

I get really angry when I think of how we blew that draft pick. We have so many needs on defense now. We sure could have used a solid young stud in that draft. Will Shea work out as a serviceable LB? Maybe. But I'm not holding my breath. I wish him the best, but fear the worst. Another 1st round draft pick bust. I get so tired of them. We've had far too many over the years.

He should have switched to LB one year ago. Now he'll need at least another year to learn and fully understand the position. Personally I don't think most members here are gonna be patient, so I guess he'll be thrown under the bus after week 1. Sad but true.

However I wish him the best.

Every GM has good ones and bad ones. Poor Shea got put into a position that he didn't have a track record of success in so give him a couple years to prove his worth. It isn't his fault he was drafted by the wrong team for the wrong position.

Don't know why everyone is so dumbfounded over this, ever since we drafted him, we said he would be a better 3-4 OLB than a 4-3 DE. For all we know, he will do very well at SLB

    Jimmors,

Really. He had MLB written all over him ... thats what I thought at the time. That he was the Urlacher replacement.

Now with him moving to SLB is this a season or less that gets him up to speed to call the shots at MLB ?

I dunno. I had big hopes for this guy ... but we knew out of the box he was no DE in the NFL.

Was he a Lovie pick or an Emery pick ? We'll never know. Hes on the team ... they found a learning spot for him ...

Hmmm ... played DE , moved to SLB ... maybe the education of defense continues after all.

For a shot caller at MLB. Time.

I fear that he might actually catch on to playing LB in the NFL, become a free agent and then eff us in our arses......I hope he will give us a chance if he does play as expected

I was hoping he was our next MLB, but the last draft changed that. No I just hope he makes the team. He won't start much, if at all, this coming season.

Isn't this what we were all calling for?

I think he has a chance of atleast playing at a higher level.

At DE he looks like a kid, at SLB I think he fits.

    We will see.

I went back to look at the roster and it shows that he is listed as 260? No Way.
He did not look over 240 on the field, maybe his playing weight is lower, because he did not look it.

All of our LBs are listed under 250.

    +1

I think you're right. He's supposed to be a good guy who works his butt off. He was put in a no-win position here. Even good GM's have brain farts sometimes, and this was Emery's. I'm a bit bitter about it, but maybe the guy can be a decent LB. I hope he can be.

    J99,

Nobody ... and I mean NOBODY has ever said if Shea was a Lovie or Emery pick. He just is what he is.

If he ends up as a good and solid SLB starter, I'd consider that Draft not as bad with him then and Jeffery
