Again it is a nick name and I doubt it was uses to insult Native Americans. I doubt Chiefs, Braves, Indians are used to put down the American Indian either.

Would you go up to Native American today a call him Native American, Brave, Chief, Seminole, Illini.......I wouldn't other than hello. I don't know what you can say to people of different ethnicity today without making sure it's completely sterile.

Maybe it's time to wipe anything referenced to this specific people group off the books so as not to offend them in anyway. That way future generations will never know they existed thereby eliminating any possible way in offending them. I always believed when you referenced something or someone in a satirical way gave validity to that specific group by that school or team by being proud to wear it on your shoulder. I have yet see a team take nickname like talibannys or natzzs even the Devil gets more respect from teams and schools.

Again go back to what was posted, not all Indians have a problem w/the NFL team in Washington being called the "Redskins", and earlier this month when they met w/some senators and Snyder there was a whopping 1 protester.

Maybe if this was an issue for the VAST majority of Indians the name would be changed already, but the fact that it's split to the point where those offended are actually a SMALL minority makes the issue moot.

Would you go up to a person in New York and call them a giant? Would you call a person in Philly a eagle? In Wisconsin would you call a person a Packer, probably not but a cheese head maybe.

    Nice deflection.

Doesnt matter how many people take offense to it. There aren't any slaves in America (well not legally, anyway), yet nobody is going to start a team called the "Georgia Cotton-Pickers." Ethnic Slurs should not be used for team names, period. And when it comes to individual Tribes' names, then that is up to the tribes themselves whether or not they give permission (like the Seminoles)

But if its just a nickname, then why not use it? Just like you would call a guy "dude" or a woman "miss" without issue, why not refer to them as "redskins?" Or if not you personally, then would you object to someone who goes up to a Native American and says "hey there redskin, how's it going?" Would that be an acceptable greeting?

Oh, I think it DOES matter how many people are offended. One of the polls of people of indian descent out there (sue me I don't have the link) had about 95% didn't care about the moniker. If just a few people don't like it then it's just being pissy.

People don't call each other by monikers.

What's the saying: "if your offended by small things only small things you shall be".
