Why did the 80's Bears fail to win more than one Super Bowl?

    Buddy Ryan left.
    Willie Gault left
    Otis Wilson left
Walter retired about a season early
The 49ers had a significantly better quarterback
    McMahon really wasn't that good
Ditka's motivation method obviously didn't work well over time

Ditka was an incredibly overrated coach that lives on in the hearts of the meatballs despite the fact that he had one of the most perennially talented teams throughout the 80s, and only won one SB.

Come on. They lost a game. Yes a plyoff, but it happens.

Bad luck. Lost to a weaker Redskin team with Jay Schraeder at QB. Payton fumbled (how often did that happen?), Butler missed a field goal (how often did that happen?), Schraeder picked apart Beras defense (how many times do you think he could do that?).

To quote Forrest Gump "__it happens"

Other -- as in all of the above. My feelings having suffered through the downfall and subsequent 25 years of floundering:
    #1 Mikey
#2 Everybody's ego got in the way
#3 Ditka wasn't that good a coach (strategy-wise, he was a good coach with the players, at least until the egos took over -then he kind of stunk)
#4 McMahon wasn't that great a QB. (In Bears history, yes, league history, no)
    #4 Buddy left
#5 The team was gutted and new guys were sub par (see #1)
#6 Other teams figured out how to beat the 46.

(Charles Martin basically ended McMahon's career, and stole any shot at SB #2 from us on that dirty play.)

great points shark86x. I am REALLY glad to see that I am NOT the only Bears fan who feels that both McMahon AND Ditka are vastly overrated by most Bears fans. I would also add that it wasn't just the players egos which grew out of control. Ditka had the biggest ego of all. HE stopped being a man and became a cartoonish, larger than life, fame and money hungry entity at some point in the late 80's. In other words, "Da Coach" basically killed the man. Mike Ditka, the man, went MIA sometime around 86/87.
