I'll leave last year out since its too early to make reasonable judgements or predictions. Here's a look at our last 4 years previous drafts in the top 3 rounds--where you would expect to pick immediate or eventual starters:

    2009
    1st: traded for Cutler
2nd: traded down for 3rd + DT Melton in 4th
3rd: WR Juaquin Inglesias and DT Jarron Gilbert

    2010
    1st: traded for Cutler
2nd: traded for DE Gaines Adams (RIP), pick eventually went to NE and Gronkowski
    3rd: SS Major Wright

    2011
    1st: OT Gabe Carimi
    2nd: DT Steven Paea
    3rd: FS Chris Conte

    2012
    1st: DE Shea McClellin
    2nd: WR Alshon Jeffery
    3rd: SS Brandon Hardin

That's 12 total players acquired directly or indirectly via high level 1st-3rd round draft picks. Of those....

1 is a non-elite but above average starter (Cutler)
1 is a potential elite star player (Jeffery)
1 is a decent but otherwise undistinguished starter (Paea)
1 is an inconsistent and now injured starter who will probably be gone soon (Melton)

The other 8 are/were either major disappointments or outright busts. That's 3 out of 12 that can be properly qualified as a "success". There's the main reason we are over a barrel right now. Great work by our GMs huh?

A second round pick and two third round picks turned into the best receiving tandem in the league.

I said at the time that while Cutler was a clear upgrade he wasn't worth 2 1sts, and he's lived up to those expecations to a tee, which is why it's a shame they gave him the money they did this year.As Eternal points out, we did get Marshal out for 2 3'ds. But 4 of 14 isn't exactly a better percentage.

And this is a very reason why the team let go of Lovie and Angelo, and why the first draft of Emery was a major disappointment, his 2nd picked up though. w/Long and Mills both potential starters, one likely elite. Don't know what the team has in Bostic or Greene yet either.

Your points are only valid if you compare them league wide, i.e. do this same breakdown for every team (or just the playoff ones if you want to make it easier). 3 out of 12 sounds bad, but what is the league average?

Very well could be. I just hate facts with no context. Im not going to rage over 3/12 without knowing how that compares to other teams.

We'll see. Last years draft was the first with Emery's scouting department set up the way he wants it, and that draft on the surface right now looks pretty damn good. We'll see what this year brings.

That trade of a 2 for Gaines was awful....I didn't like it at the time, and I hate it even more now.

how great is NE? They have a neg 15% and still have SB's, other then Pitt, the rest have 0. 6 of the teams that are in the pos area have won at least 1 title, Giants, NO's, Indy, GB, Balt, Sea.

Yeah..again this was from 04 to 08, but New England has basically nailed the top of their draft, not so much the middle of it, and nailed it when it comes to undrafted free agents...just like Seattle did the past few years. Also to be fair, from we played in a Superbowl in 06, but those crappy drafts didn't set us up for future success. On the flip side, look at San Diego...nails their drafts, yet doesn't have much of anything to show for it.
