+1 on Cutler's contract! If they redo the contract it adds dead cap money on at the end. My guess is that his contract will not be touched, if at all possible.

I'm sure the Bears mgmt is sick of living in cap hell.

I don't think it's so much that, but more that they don't see anyone worth doing that for in their eyes. It's the same reason why they are sucking it up and taking all of Peppers cap hit this year and not spreading it out over 2 like they could. When you look at next year we will also have Marshall's contract to re-do.

And why are you all assuming Cutler is gone in 3 years? Because thats when the guaranteed money ends? So if he goes on to have 3 all pro seasons...heck if he has 3 very good seasons we're going to get rid of him?

When did I say Cutler is gone in 3 years? I never said that, but the point of that contract was it was really a 3 year deal in the guise of a longer deal. Why in the hell would they want to add cap money onto those free years? Years when Cutler is going to be now in his mid 30's, and is already showing signs of being incapable of playing a full year. Why not keep that contract intact and let the guaranteed money fall off in 3 years.

He's getting the guaranteed money regardless. It depends on how much room you want. If you wanted to create 12 million in room you could convert 14 million of Cutlers salary to a signing bonus and it would only add 2 million per year of guaranteed money to him. It still achieves the goal of his salary decreasing each year of the deal, and the dead money wouldn't be so bad. It's obviously a just in case option, and as of right now there is nobody I would use this option for.

it only decreases his salary that year, it increases it in the following years.

No, even if you added the prorated 2 million to his salary each year it would still decrease each year. Perhaps I'm not explaining myself clearly.

    YearBase SalaryRoster BonusCap HitDead Money*
    2014$22.5M-$22.5M$38.0M
    2015$15.5M-$15.5$15.5M
    2016$16.0M-$16.0M$10.0M
    2017$12.5M$2.5M$15.0M-
    2018$13.5M$2.5M$16.0M-
    2019$17.5M$2.5M$20.0M-
    2020$19.2M$2.5M$21.7M-

If you add 2 million to each year, it still results in a lower salary from the year before(except in the 3rd year)..I.E. 17.5 mill is lower than 24.5, in the 3rd year it increases by .5 mill, in the 4th year 14.5 is lower than 18, and so on...

Does that makes sense or is my understanding off?

I see what you're saying, but it's the guaranteed/dead cap that gets added to, so we are arguing 2 points on the same subject.

Right...I'm just saying it's feasible and not that bad if there is someone they feel out there worth doing that for. Obviously there are implications for it, but when you think about what could be done with 12 million in cap room...I mean that could have been Ward and Verner right there.

Now there's a man to make the other teams RBs run the wrong way just so they don't have to run into him.

    Salary cap.
The contract is fixed and the money is agreed. What the bonus does is it is paid up front and averaged over 5 yrs. So for example if we give Culter a $10M bonus that would be credited towards the contract which is 7 yrs for $126.7M. The bonus would reduce the balance on the contract by $10m or $116.7M. The cap hit would very depending on his base + bonus. Once again it depends on the wiggle room in the contract on his base. It the $10M is taken solely from yr 1 base his base would drop from 22.5 cap hit to 12.5 +2M or 14.5 cap hit saving 8 million. the next 4 yrs would be additional 2 M . If they could reduce base over a couple yrs. which is normally lower first few yr base since they have the money already. So I am unsure what flexibility is built in to the base each yr but the contract allows them to convert to bonus, question is how the base changes with it.
