I trust Emery & Trestman's evaluation more than my own opinion, so whatever they decide to do, I'll be ok with.

Clausen number 2 and Fales number 3. Even if we had Palmer as number 3, if we had to use either one, (Fales or Pakmer) the season is a train wreck. Might as well keep the rookie and have an experienced guy who has started as number 2.

And Ric is right about that too. But don't tell him I said that. It may go to his head. :bah:

What it really comes down to is just how much of a risk they may be taking to make that attempt to put Fales on the PS. If we can it's better for him because along with whoever is the #3 he can run the scout team in practices and at least get his snaps and throws in that way. Then on games days it's all about mental reps and then film study during the week. That's really what a developmental guys needs most.

If Clausen does win the #2 spot outright I do believe Palmer would be available later on if we needed to call him back after releasing him but then we lose out on what he can contribute as a bench player week in and week out. Maybe I'm over thinking this but IMHO in order to replace all of what McCown was able to do for that offense last year we almost need a composite of Clausen on the field playing and Palmer on the bench as a set of eyes to help coach as the game progresses as McCown often did.

That's just the way I see it because I don't think either of them is as complete a package as McCown turned out to be. But there is also a chance they'll go with just one backup this year if they feel they need that extra spot for a guy who will contribute more week to week. So then it comes down to either Clausen or Palmer and so far it looks like Clausen may have a slight edge provided he's digested enough of the offense by now. If that's the case they're gonna have to take a shot at getting Fales on the PS anyway.

If Palmer does not start to show better he may be a surprise cut. Not much positive on him so far coming out of camp. He played pretty well last year in his one preseason game I thought and we cut him anyway which surprised me. He seems very intelligent and understands the X's and O's but struggling. Maybe this is just a case where he is a bettor Tutor. Years ago both Cavanaugh and Pep Hamilton were like this, never made much of an impression on the field but are thought highly of as a QB coach. Maybe coaching will be Palmers calling.
