I'm happy for Scott, he's had a great TC. Hopefully he can stay healthy for the entire season.

I'm surprised we kept 4 RBs and 3 TEs, though.

    And Fales shouldn't be there.

Other than safety and Linebacker, looks like a good group.
    • I'm shocked they kept 4 RBs, they must really like what Perry can do on STeams. This is a huge day for Perry, who I would have given a 10% chance (or less) of making the team.
    • I thought Lane had a strong showing in the last two games of the PS and was a bit surprised to see him released. Washington must have caught Joe D's eye on STeams and Bass's game four performance must have sealed the deal.
    • I disagree with holding onto Spurlock. Hopefully he's a temp. until they can find a stronger KOR specialist. Bellamy was a much stronger receiver in the PS and it's sad to see him go so that Spurlock can minimally impact STeams.
    • I really like what they did at DB. I feel like they had a wide open comp. at the position and they kept the strongest players. This positional battle was one fans could follow and nod their heads in agreement on after watching the PS. The same must have happened behind the scenes.
    • Linebacker depth looks rough. I really hope Herring can work to elevate the play of these youngsters and that Tucker can put them in situations where they can be successful. If Briggs and or Williams goes down, we have an extra soft zone in the middle of our D with little support from the safety group. I know the blame on this board will fall on Tucker's shoulders if things fall to shit with this group, but I really put this on Emery who didn't make any effort to bolster that group in he off-season (draft or free agency). Although, FA was relatively weak at the LB position this is not true of the safety spot.
    • Safety depth looks even rougher. This is a two year fail on the part of Emery who refused to address the safety position this year and last. This year there were a number of high quality safeties available in Free Agency (TJ Ward, Jarius Byrd, Donte Whitner, Chris Clemons, to name the top of the crop). The draft was weak and I think Vereen was a smart move there, but more could have/should have been done to increase the competition at this position.
Going forward, I think this is a markedly stronger team than last year's bunch on both sides of the ball. Tucker is feeling the heat from fans, but I think his coordination of the defense will be significantly improved from last (even with the weaknesses at Safety and LB). This is his second year, and while many think (and may be right) that he should be gone, I think the continuity at the DC position will prove to be a benefit to this team in the year. Talent wise this is a bottom 1/3 team, if Tucker can keep the group at the high end of the bottom 3rd or above, in my eyes it'll have been a smart move. I think he can keep us a top 20 defense throughout the year.

Offense is the money side of the ball on the Bears, just look at how hard the push was to keep a strong WR corp this year. They need to be a top 10 offense this year, anything less would be a failure.

I think the roster makes a lot of sense for what the team had throughout the preseason. Very few bad calls (in my opinion) in the cuts made.

    Bell,
Agree with your analysis. There were some curious moves that I believe are probably temporary.

    Fales
I have to believe there's a plan to get him the PS where he belongs this year. Perhaps there were worried he wouldn't clear waivers this weekend so chose to protect him for now. Other than that, there's no reason to waste a roster spot on him. DF is a #3 at most this year. He adds nothing on STs. If there's an injury to Cutler or Pickles, a vet (prob Palmer) will be signed in a New York minute as Fales isn't even ready to be #2. That's a potential for next season not now. He needs a year on the PS working with Cavanaugh.

    Spurlock
I wouldn't put a down payment on a house if I were him. I could easily see him getting released if they sign a returner off the cut list. He's the only WR of the 6 who isn't secure for now.

    Perry
Pretty much the same story. Unless they really like him for STs, I don't understand keeping a 5th udfa RB. Like Fales, I think Perry ends up on the PS soon enough.

I'm figuring Britton or another vet T will be added to the fold. After Bushrod, we have Mills who's dinged up and two guys who've never played a snap of RS NFL ball. Not buying that Leno won't be moved to the PS.

There's some decent safeties out there now who could help us. Sign one. Jerry Franklin could add depth at LB and looked good on STs. Could use him over a 3rd QB or 5th RB. And another roster spot will open up soon if they IR-return designate Marquess. There's some moves to be made yet.

I'd like to see him make the PS but he looked good enough in that last game that you have to figure a WR needy team will grab him for depth. I agree he made some nice plays.

We were an 8-8 team last year that was in the hunt for the playoffs, we could do a hell of a lot worse. Will we? I don't think so; not with the personnel improvements and the continuity of the coaching staff.

If future plans are for Fales to be the teams long term plans as the backup then they aren't going to risk him getting poached. 1 spot isn't going to make or break the ST's.

I am surprised about Perry making the team unless they like his potetnial to turn into their return man.

Sad to see Bellamy go, he looked good against the Browns ones and caught everything, but if they didn't see him working on ST's then that really doesn't matter much.

Our entire back 7 look bad. The starters aren't world beaters anymore and the backups don't look like anything but st's players at best. Emery needs to churn that entire group(won't happen for the LB's this year though). Other then McMannis none of those CB's thrill me, and the entire S squad makes me lugubrious.

Dallas would like to tell you that the Bears can, and Dallas will likely be one of the worst D's again this year, and that's w/that amazing DC Hot Rod Maranelli the Bears wanted back so badly.

There is a lot of wiggle room for change I see on this roster. This is the list for today but tomorrow is a new day and I expect many changes yet to come.

Perry is strictly a STeams guy and we need a few of those apparently. Now if DeCamillis can only figure out what to do with 'em were set.

The only move I have a serious issue with is keeping Spurlock over CWill. Unless they plan on moving Wilson to IR with recall and that will open up another spot I believe that was a poor decision. We may be able to slide him onto the PS but he could very easily get coaxed away from us like we took him from NOLA.

The rest I can't see any real problems with and there's always the chance they may re-sign one or more of the vested vets (Britton or Roland maybe) they released after the first game when they don't have to guarantee their contracts for the year. Some new faces again this year. Younger faces. So that's good.

I thought Spurlock looked pretty good the 1/2 of the Browns game. Its not like Spurlock or Williams will see the field much as a reciever anyway. Williams was only looking average in the return game, not sure how much the Hammy had to do with it but they tend to linger so that may have effected the decision as well.
